You're right, funding from #NLnet is a very good sign. I've had the real pleasure of working on two NLnet-funded projects in the past.

I agree with you that the barriers to entry for self-hosting many services are unfortunately very high—far too high for many. But that's precisely where tools like #YunoHost come in.

I've been playing around with it a bit over the last few days and I have to say it's really easy to use. The fact that devices like #RaspberryPi are explicitly supported makes the barrier to entry much lower in my opinion.

My situation is a bit different. I already self-host a lot of things: DNS, web server, email, cloud, Matrix, Mastodon, Pixelfed. And everything runs on Raspberry Pis. Some of it is at my home, much of it in hosting locations distributed across Europe.

Her er appene mine samlet:

Just had an YunoHost app upgrade fail because of missing dependencies, and checking the logs I see I didn't notice that GPG keys for packages.sury.org expired, and the system didn't pull any php updates for some time. Same for yarn.

In the context of yarn, I found the hint to run "yunohost tools regen-conf apt --force", which fixed the problem for the sury.org repo (but not for my yarn, so I'll update that pubkey manually 🤷‍♂️).

Slightly surprised the update UI just displayed an "All system packages are up to date!" instead of a prominent error (I missed the yellow History status).

Now # Snac is available to install from #yunohost app catalog -> https://apps.yunohost.org/app/snac

What is Snac?

Snac (also known as #Snac2) is a simple, minimalistic ActivityPub instance. It is written in portable C and uses a file-based storage system with no database required.

It supports creating and managing user accounts, posting, following, and interacting with the wider Fediverse. It also includes a Mastodon-compatible API for use with third-party clients.

IMO: It is the best option for people who wants to self-host their own Fediverse instance.

What is YunoHost

TL;DR: Install Yunohost on Debian system, it manages your domains, email, SSl certificates and you can install multiple applications from its app catalog.

YunoHost is an operating system aiming to simplify server administration and therefore democratize self-hosting while making sure it stays reliable, secure, ethical and lightweight. It is a copylefted libre software project maintained by volunteers. Technically, it can be seen as a server distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux.

@ralph_social

Dear Fedi friends,

The normalization of "vibe coding" in certain environments is pushing me in the exact opposite direction.

I, a normie (ok maybe a semi-technical person), would like to learn some basic computer programming.

I need some advice about where to start because I'm a little clueless in this regard. Maybe it will help to share my goals, so that you can tailor your advice:

1) I'd like to become much more proficient using CLI... so that one day for example I could migrate a #YunoHost app to a new server without breaking anything

2) I'd like to be able to confidently run remote backups with rsync

3) Security: I need to learn how to turn my VPS or Raspi into a fortress

4) Eventually I'd like to learn #FreeBSD

Where does one even start?

I'm based in Paris, France, speak French, English and Italian, but remote learning is preferable because my child is in school only 4 days a week and has 2-week holidays every 6 weeks of school (thanks to the French educational system, don't ask me).

I'm super motivated to learn all these things, I just don't know where to start.
