Let me show off my last project: ediaf an extensible digital frame.
It started, some months ago, as a simple replacement for my alarm clock but it became soon a serious, pathological, over-engineering case that features: moon phase calculator, English dictionary, weather forecast and music player. And all of these are extensions installed from its package manager (also an extension! π ).
And yes an alarm clock is available too! π

It's not easy to put OpenBSD on a Raspberry Pi. A lot of steps are involved.
Not so much with FreeBSD, where pre-built images are available. You can use the Raspberry Pi imager to put them on the SD card. I tried one of these quite a few months back, and it was super easy. It has UFS, not ZFS, but you can get a system up and running quickly.
Do they work on a USB drive? I don't know.
