Il Fatto Quotidiano: Rimborso Amazon da 51 dollari o trappola digitale? La truffa che mette a rischio soldi e informazioni sensibili
Un assegno da 51 dollari, apparentemente legittimo, consegnato a mano con una lettera in inglese che cita la Ftc e persino l’accordo con Amazon per la causa sul pacchetto Prime. Dietro questa mossa studiata nei dettagli si nasconde una truffa sofisticata, scoperta da una donna di Formigine e segnalata dall’Adiconsum di Modena e Reggio Emilia.
“Esiste realmente una causa che dà diritto al rimborso ma riguarda solo i clienti degli Stati Uniti. Potreste perdere dei soldi e regalare i vostri dati personali”, avverte l’associazione. Come riportato dal Corriere della Sera, la vicenda ha avuto inizio mercoledì 25 marzo, quando un giovane italiano, ben vestito, ha consegnato alla donna una busta commerciale chiedendo solo conferma del nome e poi andando via. All’interno, un assegno emesso dalla Huntington National Bank di Columbus, Ohio, e una lettera che parlava del Restore Online Shopper’s Confidence Act, della Ftc e del presidente Donald Trump, con istruzioni per il rimborso via PayPal entro il 28 aprile 2026.
La donna, insospettita dalla consegna a mano, ha subito denunciato ai carabinieri e contattato Adiconsum. Le verifiche hanno confermato i suoi dubbi: “La lettera di Formigine è un capolavoro falsario, la prova che il catalogo delle truffe continua ad arricchirsi. Ecco: non depositate l’assegno, denunciate subito. State attenti ai messaggi successivi con link che mettono a rischio i dati, anche quelli bancari”, mette in guardia Adele Chiara Cangini, coordinatrice Adiconsum Emilia-Romagna per Modena e Reggio Emilia.
I rischi
I rischi principali sono due: il cosiddetto “overpayment scam”, in cui la banca accredita i fondi e i truffatori chiedono un bonifico di restituzione; e il phishing, con link che possono compromettere password, dati bancari e informazioni personali. La causa reale coinvolge solo gli utenti statunitensi di Amazon Prime, mentre la banca e il sito indicato nella lettera non hanno alcun legame con clienti italiani. Un tentativo di truffa ben architettato, che sfrutta documenti autentici e un’illusione di legittimità : un promemoria che, anche davanti a cifre modeste come 51 dollari, la prudenza non è mai troppa.

A $51 check, apparently legitimate, delivered by hand with a letter in English citing the FTC and even the agreement with Amazon regarding the Prime package lawsuit. Behind this meticulously planned move lies a sophisticated scam, discovered by a woman from Formigine and reported by Adiconsum of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
“There is a real lawsuit that entitles you to a refund but concerns only U.S. customers. You could lose money and give away your personal data,” warns the association. As reported by Corriere della Sera, the story began on Wednesday, March 25th, when a young Italian man, well-dressed, handed the woman a business envelope asking only for confirmation of the name and then leaving. Inside, a check issued by the Huntington National Bank of Columbus, Ohio, and a letter referring to the Restore Online Shopper’s Confidence Act, the FTC, and President Donald Trump, with instructions for a refund via PayPal by April 28, 2026.
The woman, suspicious of the hand delivery, immediately reported it to the Carabinieri and contacted Adiconsum. The checks confirmed her doubts: “The Formigine letter is a forgery masterpiece, proof that the catalog of scams continues to enrich itself. Here: do not deposit the check, report immediately. Be careful of subsequent messages with links that put data at risk, even banking data,” warns Adele Chiara Cangini, coordinator of Adiconsum Emilia-Romagna for Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The Risks
The main risks are two: the so-called “overpayment scam,” in which the bank credits the funds and the fraudsters request a refund transfer; and phishing, with links that can compromise passwords, banking data, and personal information. The real lawsuit involves only U.S. Amazon Prime users, while the bank and the website indicated in the letter have no connection with Italian customers. A well-engineered fraud scheme, exploiting authentic documents and an illusion of legitimacy: a reminder that, even in front of modest amounts like $51, prudence is never too much.
