Anyone know how much it costs to host a #VPS for a #Matrix #homeserver with all the bells and whistles (Voice/video calls included)? Or how powerful of a PC would I need to host it locally?

Matrix is the closest we've got to a self hosted Discord so I'd like to know my options.

I’ve been on a little #XMPP and #Matrix kick lately. Anyone aware of or have any suggestions for servers that have active #DataScience chat rooms? Been looking, but haven’t found anything yet.

Liebe Matrix Gang,
Ich suche einen zuverlässigen Homeserver für Arbeit + Chaos, der nicht bei einer Einzelperson liegt. Standort Deutschland oder EU Mitgliedsstaat. Bis jetzt sieht’s nach dem von nitrokey aus.

Erfahrungen/Tipps/Quellen?

The more Element is nagging me to allow notifications I just become more concerned if I really want to use this Matrix messenger. I have said No once and I meant it.

I wanted to try #selfhosting #matrix but I'm having everything proxied by cloudflare to control what's allowed to access our prod... And seems like matrix uses a custom port for federation instead of HTTP/(S) which sucks. I'd need to get a VPS instead not to open traffic for random IPs. Any ideas if there's another service that would proxy the DNS and get to me from a pool of defined trusted IPs?

@js In addition to email, I use #Thunderbird on the desktop for #xmpp, #irc and #matrix. Why install septate apps? Plus, Thunderbird is always kept up to date.

Just wanted to install an #XMPP client to create an account to test something. I moved away to #Matrix years ago because I had no hope anymore for #XMPP, but now that I wanted to create an account, I am just shocked at how dead it is: #Fedora still has Gajim 1.7.3, when the last release is 2.4.1. #pkgsrc is a bit but noch much better with 2.1.1. #Tkabber is even worse: pkgsrc has 0.11.1, when 1.1.2 is the latest release that was released in 2015(!). It seems distributions keep XMPP clients around, but don’t update them because nobody is using them anymore. I had not expected for XMPP to be that dead. That’s shocking.

I also think if distributions cannot be bothered to update a package in over 10 years, they should just remove it…

Discovering the protocol again as an interesting thing to tinker with. It sticks events into rooms and is easy to interact with from software as well. 🤔

Relating to my experiments with #Matrix, I had a quick look at whether I can host #Jitsi here momentarily.

"Here" is a relative term in this case. _Obviously_ if I didn't care about the number of remote participants I had, I could literally host it on my home network… but the 5Mbps uplink might prove a wee bit limiting if I have, say, 12~16 participants on simultaneously.

So I'll settle for something on the continent. I have a small VPS at Binary Lane, could I use that? It runs OpenBSD. A look around revealed this:

2023.asiabsdcon.org/program/_p

That uses VMs running OpenBSD (using VMM). Given I'd be doing this on a VM itself, there's a "Yo Dawg" joke in there somewhere. The killer though: two of the VMs have 4GB RAM each, the other two 2GB. My whole VPS instance is 2GB.

I'm not wedded to OpenBSD, but the cost of renting a ~16GB RAM VM so that it'll be hosted somewhere with big fat pipes is a little out of my budget. (AU$60/month through BinaryLane.) I guess I'll just settle for using the main Jitsi instance.

Why the interest though? In a word: geopolitics.

Presently, Brisbane WICEN has its meetings on Zoom, has done ever since COVID-19 shut everything down — we haven't succeeded in finding a physical meeting place (after HSBNE kicked us out). Discord is another possible option, but not one I'm keen on as it's another proprietary platform run out of the US.

If the US gets narky with the outside world… let's hypothetically say the US sanctions Australia for not letting them mine uranium royalty-free… we (Australia) might find ourselves cut-off from access to these US-based platforms.

Jitsi from what I can see, is hosted in Europe. It works… about its only downside is accessibility was non-existent in its client a few years back, not sure if they've fixed it since. There's a lot of cable though between here and Europe… any number of which could get cut.

Hence the interest in something on this continent. If such a situation arose, lots of organisations would be impacted, not-for-profits and commercial groups alike.

Hosting something here is certainly doable … those aren't big numbers for a shared non-commercial and community-run instance. Bandwidth is an unanswered (but important!) question at this point, no idea how much would be needed for, say, 1000 video users simultaneously.

I suppose a big question is, would there be _demand_ for such a thing? How many not-for-profits out there have a need to meet regularly a couple of times a month on a video conference for a few hours? How would we go about establishing something like that and funding it?

Something to ponder.
