Maybe the "Followers / Following" counts could be in private visibility only, and that will prevent the abuse. And also I think the visibility of your posts is more important here on Mastodon than of how many people are actually following you.

This is great advice, came here to say basically the same thing. Linux Mint is a very good starting point for a new Linux user IMO.
Using a tool like Etcher, you'll be able to create a live ("testing without damage") USB drive in a point and click way - unlikely that you'd have to futz with the command line at all.
Then you can play around with the system, and unless you install it from the USB drive (which I wouldn't recommend for the first few days), it won't change your existing PC install (probably Windows, I'm assuming?) at all.
If questions come up during install, google/ddg them, or post here on #Mastodon with a couple hashtags (like #Linux, #linuxMint.)
