More people are stripping off on Scotland's beaches, in forests and on hillside rambles as naturism enjoys a surge fuelled by the wild swimming boom, outdoor saunas and the lure of the country’s secluded coastline.
From organised skinny dips in Fife, naked rambles and nude swim sessions at leisure centres, to woodland clubs and medieval-themed naturism weekends near Stirling, membership groups say Scotland is fast becoming a magnet for those keen to embrace the outdoors without clothing.
According to British Naturism, interest has risen sharply across the UK since Covid restrictions eased, prompting many to reassess their relationship with nature, their bodies and wellbeing.
However, Scotland’s geography, its wealth of secluded beaches, wild countryside and right to roam rules are said to give it a particular advantage.
“People are more inclined to go skinny dippy in the Highlands where they are not going to be filmed, rather than a naturist beach in somewhere like Brighton where there’s a row of people watching with cameras,” says Mr Bass.
“I know people who wouldn’t describe themselves as naturists, just as swimmers who go to Scotland because it’s a place they can swim without wearing a costume.
“There are lots of beautiful spots in Scotland to go skinny dipping, they’re secluded… so why not do it?”
The upswing in interest has surprised even people who have been involved in naturism for years: when one enthusiast set up a new skinny dipping and naturists Facebook group in the Moray area, they were astonished to gather nearly 200 members within just a few weeks...

My favorite use of the Edit command on #Mastodon is to quickly fix a poorly thought through post with a large "EDIT:" at the top. It keeps the original post but redirects it and stops a cascade of replies. It's much more reasonable than just deleting the post.
Using the "EDIT" trick a) makes it clear you screwed up and b) solves the original problem. It's feels like a more honest way of owning up to a mistake.

Maybe there is a utility app I could use? I'm even willing to download ALL of my posts once a year to maintain my own archive...

Rummaging through the same archive that yielded those Sun Bathing Review copies, I found something else: a stack of Health & Efficiency magazines from the 1950s with Pamela Green on the cover.
Origins: Health Before Nudism
Health & Efficiency claims a lineage to around 1900, though the first issue under that name appeared in 1918 when Health & Vim changed its title. Vim itself had been published since 1902. These were health magazines covering diet, exercise, herbalism, and “living a healthy and efficient life.”
By the 1920s, H&E was calling itself “The National Magazine of Health, Physical Culture, Sociology, Hygiene, Natural Healing, Reformed Diet.” It covered bodybuilding and birth control, aiming to coax Britons away from “stewed steak and kidney puddings.”
Champion of the Sunlight Cause
The magazine became a platform for what Dr Caleb Williams Saleeby called “Modern Sun Worship.” Saleeby detailed sunlight’s effects on rickets and tuberculosis, citing Swiss clinics and British heliotherapy experiments. When his Sunlight and Health appeared in 1923, it found a receptive audience in H&E’s readership.
Letters pages flourished. In 1921, a call for nude bathing in public swimming baths prompted eager responses—including from Harry “Dion” Byngham, who proposed a national society for “Nude Life Culture.” From these exchanges emerged the English Gymnosphist Society, which established “The Camp” in an Essex garden in 1924.
The Turn to Nudism
H&E had shown occasional nudes in the 1920s as part of physical culture coverage. In 1931–32 it published full articles on nudism as theory and practice. By 1933, its contents were wholly nudist...
