#Bluesky is no longer available to Mississippi residents.

#Mississippi’s HB 1126 requires platforms to introduce age verification for all users and get parental consent for anyone under 18. Penalties for noncompliance are up to $10,000 per user.

Sites have to collect and store sensitive information from all its users, in addition to the detailed tracking of minors. This is too much of a burden.

It is uncertain if the law applies to small self-hosted sites. The law only says it pertains to platforms that provide social interaction services.

Because of this, hear-me.social, feddit.online, and my-place.social will no longer permit registration or logins from IP addresses coming from Mississippi. Feddit.online already restricts traffic from both the UK and France due to similar laws that I cannot comply with, as NSFW communities can be accessed.

Re #bluesky and #mississippi, I don't get why the burden is on the companies and not on the users. let the state try to prevent their residents from getting to the site. weird.

Bluesky Goes Dark in Mississippi Over Age Verification Law

“Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users” | Bluesky blocks Mississippi

I’m not in favour of “proactive shunning” but when a platform’s entire service for their entire user base is put at risk by government demands for identity or age verification… switch it off:

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

🚀🎭 responds to Mississippi's Age Assurance Law by touting their "investments" in tools—because nothing says "we care" like algorithms pretending to babysit your kids. Meanwhile, they aim to "empower users," assuming those users are old enough to read their endless blog posts without parental guidance. 👶💻

Looks like my Governor fucked over my state again.

First, it was Pornhub, and now Bluesky is blocked.

Fuck Tate Reeves! Not only is he anti-trans, he’s also anti-porn and a GOP bootlicker.

Content warning:Mississippi Age Verification Law: Bluesky, Decentralization

Bluesky's announcement notes that

"This decision applies only to the Bluesky app, which is one service built on the AT Protocol. Other apps and services may choose to respond differently. We believe this flexibility is one of the strengths of decentralized systems—different providers can make decisions that align with their values and capabilities, especially during periods of regulatory uncertainty. We remain committed to building a protocol that enables openness and choice."

Of course, today 99.9%+ of the people using AT Protocol-based services are using Bluesky's app. More positively, though, there's a lot of momentum for non-Bluesky infrastructure. Over the last couple of weeks, hundreds of people have migrated their accounts to Blacksky; alternate apps were already getting a lot of attenition because they don't have to include the age verification Bluesky just introduced for UK users for the Onlkine Safety Act; and projects like Northsky, Gander, and Eurosky are working on infrastructure that's not based in the US. So it'll be interesting to see how things play out.
