User ban controversy reveals Bluesky’s decentralized aspiration isn’t reality
Bluesky’s protocol is so complicated that not even the biggest alternative network has figured out how to become independent
https://plus.flux.community/p/banning-controversy-reveals-blueskys
#moderation is a shit job. always was, always will be. it's a human problem, no tech can dispel the chore. someone always has to be there, moderating
of course tooling can help immensely. the tooling shifts and manages the chore. that shift can be in good ways. also maybe unintentional bad ways
you know all this
i'm just laying it out so i can say:
on #bluesky, and on #mastodon, as you say, #blocklists create new terrible problems
i'm saying this tooling shift is a bad idea
how did you get from "look at how shitty #bluesky's #moderation is" to "anyway, #mastodon's moderation sucks"
moderation always sucks. it's a shit job. it's contentious. there's tons of grey areas
but it's necessary
and yes, mastodon's moderation sucks in many ways
and yet, bluesky's tech bro hand waving: "farm it out with no money involved, i hate moderation" is far worse
it's not freedom. it's "i don't want to deal with it"
terrible motivations result in terrible reality
sure
so #bluesky's effort to farm out #moderation doesn't solve any problems
iit makes them worse in fact for the reasons you delineate
moderation is moderation. it has to be done, there's no way around it
"well i hate it, the job sucks. why don't we just shift the responsibility, outsource it with no money involved and wash our hands of it. we can hype up the idea of 'freedom' and sell it as a gimmick that way"
et voila
the terrible motivation results in a terrible reality
and there does seem to be freedom when #bluesky's approach to #moderation is "fuck that job, it's too annoying, you do it" with blocklists and composable moderation
but then they police *that*
so in the end it's just a trick, a gimmick
it keeps the hamster's running on the wheel of "bluesky is decentralized and free!" when it is neither
Can't say I'm surprised about the #Bluesky drama. The "decentralization" was always talked about but never actually there in practice and now the owners have demonstrated that for everyone
Who would have thought, something good out of the Bluesky. An idea that's being upgraded in every single way.
Mastodon planning to introduce starter packs and help with the onboarding process is a true step forward.
However, even better are their perspectives and observations about privacy and how packs are constructed. Another win, alongside quote posts.

The year is 2025. Social is entirely occupied by Enshittified Corporate Goons. Well, not entirely. One small decentralized platform of indomitable nerds still holds out against the invaders....

I don't know much about whatever is going on with #BlueSky. But also, I don't need to know either. As soon as I knew the basics about it, it's obvious how that story will end. Go open and federated or go home. We don't need another centralized venture capital CEO driven dumpster fire speed running the history of Twitter.
