Using a protocol besides #ActivityPub makes you a real bastard.

Those in power long ago decided that if something becomes popular, it must be profitable. If it is popular but not profitable, it must be controlled. And if it is popular, not profitable, and not controllable, it must be made illegal.

This is one reason I suspect the Fediverse will be targeted in the future. It’s also why I keep telling people to avoid U.S. domain extensions — including word-based ones.

If anyone is looking to start their own website and wants to use a domain name extension outside the jurisdiction of the USA, Russia, or China, I would suggest the following:

.am (Armenia)
.at (Austria)
.be (Belgium)
.bz (Belize)
.cc (Cocos Islands)
.ch (Switzerland)
.co (Colombia)
.cr (Costa Rica)
.cz (Czech Republic)
.dk (Denmark)
.fi (Finland)
.ge (Georgia)
.is (Iceland)
.li (Liechtenstein)
.me (Montenegro)
.nl (Netherlands)
.nu (Niue)
.se (Sweden)
.to (Tonga)
.tv (Tuvalu)
.tw (Taiwan)
.ws (Samoa)

All of these countries have strong protections for freedom of speech, including speech that defends and promotes minority rights — such as LGBTQ+ rights. Domain registration is open to everyone; you don't need to be a citizen or own a business in any of these countries.

Oof. Tried to start engaging with Fediverse content on makertube.net, but I neglected to read the rules; you need to be a maker to sign up.

Which is a fine policy, however it really illustrates some weaknesses in both Peertube and cross-service integrations:

  1. Can't login to Peertube with Mastodon accounts, so you don't get any personalization (e.g. followed channels, tags). You also continue to receive nags to sign up/login.

  2. Subscribing redirects you out to your Mastodon instance. I'm familiar with the friction since similar happens even within the Mastodon sphere.

  3. Attempting to engage isn't possible (likes) or kicks you out to your Mastodon (comments)... after you manually type your username and instance again.
