i've not done any reading on parasocial relationships so am just spitballing really and don't have anything like an insight nor any knowledge of psychology as a discipline or as a practice. in short, i'm roundly unqualified to comment.
i've always thought that parasocial covered the kind of emotional attachments folks develop toward celebrities and that apparently unbounded, untethered adoration strikes me as pretty unhealthy so have always thought of it as a problematic phenomenon.
having got that out of the way, i am constantly confronted by emotional responses i have toward folks on my timeline (i restrict myself to follows (almost exclusively restrict boosts for everyone)). i have heroes for whom i experience a rush of gratitude when they lay out their fearless explorations (@grimalkina i'm looking at you) and share their lives and their discoveries, and i have comrades who i feel as though i'm watching over in some insubstantial yet important way.
there are folks who i'm just grateful to see are plugging away sharing their little joys and distractions and folks who keep me in one loop or another i would almost certainly drop out of were it not for their sharing. i don't know what i'm talking about (clearly) but it seems to me that as isolated as i may be in meatspace, the social contact i enjoy here on masto is adequate to the task of nourishing my basic needs in very substantive ways that i think explains peoples' attachments to social platforms of one kind or another above and beyond the rage-bait meat grinder we're so often framing them to be.
i realise fedi's different to blewski or fb or whatever but i do reckon there's a distinction to be made that can encompass these toxic platforms too and explain something about why we're so compelled above and beyond the lizard-brain hunger for sensation.

My goal to spend way less time on social media is going well so far. 😃 I'm posting a lot less and I've started opening the Flipboard app instead of social media. Scrolling through Flipboard is a lot more calming than being subjected to all the rage bait and yelling on Meta apps.
