Finally got infobeamer working on a Raspberry Pi 5 after two days of pain that ended when I replaced a perfectly good, known-working SD card with another brand new card. Fuuuu......

Huge props to Florian Wesch at info-beamer for patiently working through everything else that could possibly be wrong, especially as it was 100% not his fault that an SD card supplied by an official Pi distributor (and even branded "Raspberry Pi") was the problem. Actually TWO of them were, which is why it took so long to accept the possibility that the cards were the problem.

Once the thrice-curséd card was replaced, the promised ten-minute install really did happen! Totally simple and straightforward.

Anyway, ended up with a working digital signage solution. A GOOD one. And amazingly it's free for minor use - it only costs if you go over a GB of data or have more than one display. Well, you do need to supply the infrastructure: Like a Pi, SD card, cables, display and an Internet connection.

Even if you need to pay for it it's ridiculously cheap.

So, if you need digital signage, do yourself a favour and check out info-beamer (info-beamer.com). And they are on Mastodon, too, how good is that :-)

Kinda annoying that the 5 uses micro HDMI rather than allowing HDMI over the usb-c connector. Feels like an annoying cost saving as it's another cable I need to order that I'll probably (hopefully) use once

My #RaspberryPi 4B is acting up and I think it's data corruption(?) from not powering off properly when it stopped responding. I really need to buy a switch to shutdown safely...

I formatted the SSD (SMART status seems ok), flashed the latest #DietPi and slowly setting back my services.

This is a great chance for me to actually sort out the messy initial setup of experimenting with #SelfHosting I'm in the process of setting up a #cron job with #rsync, #syncthing & dietpi-backup now. 🤞#Rpi4

I was able to bring back an old Raspberry Pi (Raspberry Pi 1 Model B) and I'm looking for interesting (ideally, self-hosted) project ideas for using it,

I'm up for suggestions (beyond pi-hole).

What are you using your old raspberries for?

(Retoots appreciated)

Awhile ago I setup Home Assistant and started to add in all the little gadgets I had sprinkled around the house. I started with a weather dashboard for the wife to see what was coming and to stalk updates. She's a numbers person who loves to see stats. We've also had the house filled with Hue bulbs and she's enjoyed telling the lights to turn on or splash the room in colors.

Her desk has two lamps, one on the desk and one behind her monitors. I call that one an Accent lamp. Today I unveil setting up a Raspberry Pi 3 with a touchscreen display and buttons to toggle the lights near her and even deal with dreary days where her body wants sun but the universe isn't listening that day. She also has access to all the other dashboards I setup for her on that device.

She loves it.

I'll admit, the RPi3s are not as powerful as I remember. But then, I didn't use them for GPU stuff, just me, a terminal, and tmux. So when I turned on the GUI and puttered around it really lowered my expectation. The boot up is slow, 20-40 seconds until it is up and working. But once it's up, it seems good.
