Last weekend I met the author of this amazing new book introducing the foundation concepts of coding for pre-school children. Parents at my workshops and Pi Club events often ask for advice on how to get their children started before the age when I've found they can typically manage block based coding tools like Scratch. This is a superb guide to play based learning for these youngest age groups. magazine.raspberrypi.com/books

🤔 Oh, look! Another -board nobody asked for. Qualcomm's attempt at playing matchmaker with results in a mutant that can't decide if it's Raspberry Pi or Uno when no one's looking. It's like squinting at an Uno through beer goggles at a Halloween party. 🎃🔍

This is part of my weekend fun. Coffee stains included.
The two Raspberry Pis are powered by NetBSD, the mini PC by illumos/SmartOS, and the two APU boards by FreeBSD.

The #AutomatedMothTrap outside my house in #Canberra had been offline for a couple of weeks, because it was crashing each night. It's fixed now, and the #moths are getting much more prominent as the weather warms up here.

The problem was in the power supply to the #RaspberryPi controller. I built it using the variable voltage DC-DC Buck Converters shown here. They are cheap and easy to use, but their efficiency (or at least the output voltage) drifts downwards over time. The one powering the RPi had dropped to 4.7V. When the lights were turned on - and I assume when additionally everything in the box got warmer - efficiency was dropping a little further and the RPi simply shut down. It's now running at around 5.2V and remained stable all last night - montage of images attached.

The small moth is only the second example I've seen here of the oecophorid Cirromitra tetratherma. It turned up sometime after 03:00 this morning.

:raspberrypi: Air Quality Monitor plays Game of Life

The problem with air quality is that you can’t really tell how good or bad it is just by looking — unless it’s really bad, that is. It’s usually more helpful to have some kind of sensor that can tell you what the deal is. To that end, [Arnov Sharma] built a neat air quality monitor with a fun twist.
