my #selfhosting started with #PiHole at the end of 2019 when I bought fresh #RaspberryPI 4.

In the next few years there was a lot of different #homelab setups (I'd say around 8-10 "servers"), one of my favorite from those times is Supermicro X9.

Services were launched with #Docker (and compose) via #Portainer.

At 2022 I've tried #Ansible and it was impressive. Pet-project helped a lot with servers maintenance.

Currently I've switched to #NixOS and there is another personal project for that. In current server stack are my old laptop with i7-8750H and 32GB RAM, Synology DS220j as NFS (2*4TB mirror) and RPi4 as #HomeAssistant host

Changed some things in my piinstall Ansible Playbook.
In addition to installing software it now enables Fail2Ban and firewalld.
It also changes the ssh port, disables password authentication and changes some settings for Fail2Ban.

After that it of course reloads those services.

Check it out at codeberg.org/Spoljarevic/Ansib

Poehe. After what seems like two days of battle with Raspberry Pi and MotionEye I have a camera working but only because I installed DietPi. I'm liking DietPi's simple headless install of packages. Very nice #RaspberryPi #DietPi

@never_released what if I told you that #ARM64 demands all code to be signed, it's just that it's either done on-the-fly transparently or specific firmware (i.e. #RaspberryPi's bootcode.bin) got that specifically patched out

@patricos

Microslop have / had a very good marketing strategy, discounts for students and education. That gets them early. Also every pc sold came with a bundled license for windose at around £ 60
So you had / have to pay the startup fee.

Try asking a main-line supplier to take the bundled license off the price. Nocando.

Go to an online supplier, spec your pc and they build it,
For Linux if you want

Some schools are now turning to linux with raspberry pi 's so there is hope.

@mlanger ditto.

It's just that "#AlwaysOnlineDRM" is more of a malware and hinderance than anything.

With #FLOSS this issue just doesn't exist. Worst-case a distro like #Debian will remind me to 'please get some updates' but not only can I tell it to 'shut up, and never ask me again' but I can even update it as an airgapped system from a burned disc, external drive or NAS.

Similarly, I think #FrugalComputing has it's merits and I'd love to see more things like @violenceworks 's #VT69 terminal

Why do I find #SSH authentication keys so difficult to implement?

The closest I have found to an idiot's guide didn't work and now I have messed with so many config files I will probably have to do a fresh install to have a chance.

Does anyone know of a really simple walk-through *which is not a YouTube video* and not about GitHub? Ideally for a #RaspberryPi 5 but Debian will do.

Please RT
