2) The reason that Matrix does not work.
When it comes to federation, Matrix actually does kind of work. But the end to end encryption does not. It requires alot of work for the end user, even one with Experience like me, to make it so I can read messages and get messages.
I, and basically every other user, just wants to log in and get to chatting. I want to have it on multiple devices, and I don't want to have to set up a key on every single device. If there was a more automatic way to get ones private key from device to device, it would work alot better. Its less secure, but its more secure than what we have with platforms like Discord.
But still the end user experience has SO much more that needs to be not just polished up, but potentially entirely replaced. Initial joins of rooms are soo slow. Emojis and stickers need a federated standard. Streaming is non-existent, and group chat is problematic. I like matrix, I run a conduwuit server, but I could never expect my community to move to it.
I could with Fluxer though. Even in its current, practically DDOSed state, it DOES work.
Fluxer really needs more devs... I'm kind of thinking of joining the effort..

Here's what I want out of the next discord-like replacement.
1) Being able to run my own server but be connected to all of the rest of the servers is priority one. Because, to be quite blunt, I have noticed that every social networking platform goes through the following cycle:
* New platform comes up, promises not to be evil (usually in comparison to another platform everyone is leaving)
* People flock to the new platform on hopeful acceptance of this promise.
* The userbase reaches a critical mass, and the creators of the platform realize it's not going to be easy for users to move.
* Monetization begins. Starts with things people don't really need but might want.
* Greed sets in, and monetization spreads to things people actually need.
* The platform maximizes how much money it can bring in without becoming evil.
* The platform abandons its promise not to be evil. But people remain because it's hard to change platforms and all of their users may not switch to another.
* The developers of the platform do something truly evil and breaks the trust of the community. Everyone starts looking for a new platform.
* Repeat from beginning.
I do not want to keep being part of this cycle, and thats why I want federation and the ability to run my own server. Because I can't trust these community silos, like Discord, and Stoat, and Root, to keep their promises not to be evil. I've been seeing this pattern recur since the 90s. Skype did it, AIM did it, even Google Plus had the plug pulled on it.. I can only trust myself not to be Evil.

Grad mal ausprobiert ob ich notfalls mit meinem #Matrix als Voice Server alternative (einfach mal die Discord Channel unter einem gleichnamigen Space kopiert) und versucht mit mir selbst in einen Voice Channel zu gehen.
Jetzt scheint etke.cc, also mein Matrix hoster, das mit den Element voice calls net unterstützt von der Server config. *sigh*
