I've been hosting a local (non-federated) #Matrix server for several weeks now, mainly to use bridges for a unified messenger.
It's brilliant, but also maddening. On the one hand, two-way message sync works _really, really well_, although backfill is a little inconsistent. No more 3 Electron clients for me!
On the other, clients constantly lose their own read/unread state. Emoji sometimes sync, and sometimes don't. And room-state changes are so noisy it's hard to find actual messages.

@ajayiyer I'm trying out 2 installs of #gotosocial. One *not* behind a reverse proxy (a straightforward install on a cloud VPS), and one behind a reverse proxy (the #nginx reverse proxy being on a public VPS, but the backend is on the LAN, using "trusted-proxies" properly in config.yaml).
The former case (no reverse proxy) works well. The latter case (uses a reverse proxy) has problems with images, such as one's avatar and profile background image. *The public sees these as they should*, but Tusky and Icecubes can't see them. Somehow the reverse proxy silently trips them up. Notifications are also problematic. Actually just lots of problems in general, even though I can log into a created account with #Tusky and #Icecubes.
I'm using the latest GTS 0.21.0, and tusky and Icecubes as well

I used to keep track of shared expenses regular style, with a google sheet.
Later, a jank bash script a friend wrote that patched a file in a git repo...
that became a jank web app...
Now reincarnating it once again with an anonymous invite-based auth scheme.
The front end is static.
The back end is a #matrix server and an IdP.
Not sure if the room state is intended to be abused like this?
Kinda bummed though because it turns out matrix e2e encryption doesn't cover room state.
