with the latest bullshit from discord, I've had a lot of real world experience getting people to move to #matrix . I'm starting to think more about this whole whole issue of whether to to let people just naturally sign up to the default, like matrix.org, or Mastodon.social for this app. and I think that it's okay. I don't think we need to try to get them onto the less popular instances right away. moving instances is way easier than moving from one platform to another.

So, any #SelfHosting fans out there - how difficult is it to host&manage a Matrix-server? What kind of hardware would be necessary for 50 - 100 users? What features would we be missing compared to Discord?

It's a predicament. Encryption here would be nice but I also like the idea of #ActivityPub being for social media and #matrix being for social networking. The different levels of privacy kinda push us towards that distinction, which I think is valuable in thinking about purpose and moderation. But of course having one ID would be awesome too.
