OK, #WotW, big news.
I'm no longer using Synapse as my #Matrix server. It was really acting up, to the point of borderline unusability, all of a sudden. It had been chugging for a bit, and my server was actually shutting itself down, and even when it wasn't, things were just starting to time out. So I bumped up changing servers and software in my priority list.
Migrating to other software is really a pain; it basically is just starting a new server from scratch, which means everything is gone. Luckily, I'm the only really active person who uses the server.
What this means for you is that my Matrix server is now running on #Continuwuity — which, in addition to having an amazing and responsive dev community absolutely full of trans communists, is comparatively very small and very fast. So, I'm no longer at all attached to the Matrix Foundation, and, importantly for people who want to use Hubzilla, my Hubzilla software now has an entire machine to itself, with 6GB of buffer RAM. You'll notice a great speed increase.

Slack sent a nonprofit hacking club for teens a demand for $50,000, payable within a week, and threatened to delete the club’s message archive if it did not pay.
So they scrambled to save their years of history and knowledge stored there, and moved to Mattermost.
I'm not a big fan of Mattermost myself (as many of you know I'm all about Matrix), but any piece of self-hosted FOSS is always better, simply because you own your data.
Hack Club learned a very valuable lesson, that I hope everybody (especially governments) understands:
This ordeal has made us think more deeply about entrusting data with external SaaSes and ensuring that we own our data is definitely going to be a very big priority going forward. I’d encourage you to think the same way!
Excellent advice! Leave Big Tech, some things are simply too important to leave to others.

In diesem Vortrag möchte ich das Kommunikationsprotokoll Matrix vorstellen. Er ist vor allem für Neulinge gedacht, soll aber auch erfahrene Matrix-Nutzende nicht langweilen. Dazu werde ich nicht nur die gängigen Anwendungen vorstellen und auf potentielle Fallstricke hinweisen.
