I'm admittedly behind the curve in adopting a new #Matrix client.
I'm not one prone to conspiracies; but, I'm very happy to see my #Element client has been remarkably stable since I first aired my public grievances.
The most stable it's been in 6-8+ months....🤔 Not. A. Single. Crash.

В целом, на моём поверхностном уровне (пользуюсь 1-2 года), большая часть проблем матрикса с которыми сталкиваешься - это распространение своих ключей. Ещё есть проблемки с мета-данными, или были и теперь их нет, не уточнял.
Ещё есть техническая возможность импортировать ключи с одного аккаунта на другой, чтобы расшифровать доступную переписку, но для которой нет ключей.
Комнаты могут быть на нескольких серверах, и в этом случае возможно общение между серверами, коннект между которыми напрямую заблокирован (cred: @mo ).
Matrix - протокол. Synapse и другие - программы-сервера. Element, Element X, Fluffy chat - программы-клиенты.
Element X поддерживает https://webxdc.org/ , но ломает совместимость, не углублялся.
Матрикс довольно просто селфхостить и он сможет федерироваться с кем хочет. Желательно иметь домен с https, можно 3 уровня.
