After having my own #matrix home server for a few months, I'm decommissioning it today. It's been interesting, but honestly, can't say matrix left a good taste. It has too many weird edge cases that are usability nightmares, at least for me. The ones that really bugged me are how it's impossible to know if channels are gone from the origin, and how sometimes some channels don't federate fully without any actionable errors anywhere.
All in all, I think matrix is a great idea but too ambitious for its own good.

Bei mir läge noch an, #Discord und #Whatsapp zu ditschen. Ersteres benutzen meine Freundes und Kollegenkreise intensiv und denke ich wird recht schwer ALLE (so um die 50 Leute) davon zu überzeugen lieber zu #Matrix, oder eine andere Alternative was auch Videocalls unterstützt, zu wechseln.
Habt ihr ne Lösung, seit ihr bereits auf Matrix für alles?

Auf ein Neues versuche ich, mich mit Matrix anzufreunden. Dieses Mal mit einer Instanz auf dem eigenen Homelab: @Daniel:daccle.de Damit habe ich dann für alle Dienste, die ich nutze, eine souveräne Alternative. Wo es noch hakt, ist bei der Hardware und beim Payment, aber Mails/Kalender/Cloudspeicher/Socials – alles unabhängig vom evil empire.

#XMPP groups are centralized depending on a single server, if server dies the group is gone, server stores group metadata
#Matrix servers store a lot of group metadata across servers
with #DeltaChat the server stores ZERO metadata/state you don't depend on any server and can easily migrate your profile profile keeping group state and history in your devices
