@discoverflux It’s interesting. They flow back and forth between technical protocol problems and people problems without saying so.
They mention that ActivityPub users can’t take their posts and stuff with them if they move. They mention that #BlueSky hasn’t released a lot of stuff yet.
The chief complaint about #mastodon, which goes unanswered, is people: users antagonising other people over cultural norms. (And unsolicited Linux advice. 😜) The big problem at #bsky is also people: CEO winding people up, moderators moderating opaquely and allegedly for unreasonable reasons.
These are social problems, not tech problems. If ATProto or ActivityPub was perfect, you’d see us all separate into subnetworks of likeminded people. And I think there are limits to how big a group of people can be and all be one online social network. The size is limited by likemindedness.
Mastodon can only grow if lots of people share the values. If most people reject the values that emerge here (trigger warnings, alt text, no nazis) then most people will reject the network. The protocol on the wire can’t fix that.
Social networks are more social than network.
