Court documents show Abdulkarim sent a text to a coworker after the blaze saying, “All you had to do was pay us enough to live…pay us more of the value we bring,” reflecting a claimed hostility toward capitalism and corporations.

Attorneys from firms such as Morgan & Morgan criticized the move, arguing that removing the ads does not eliminate the underlying harms and only makes it harder for victims to find legal recourse.
The action follows two high‑profile cases in the United States. In March 2026, a New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay $375 million for misleading users about the safety of its platforms for children, finding the company liable for exposing minors to explicit material and sexual predators. Earlier, a California jury awarded $6 million to a woman who claimed a childhood addiction to social media, assigning 70 % of the liability to Meta and 30 % to Google; Snap and TikTok settled out of court. Both verdicts are being appealed by Meta, which says the decisions are incorrect.
While Meta’s advertising standards give it the right to remove content that “negatively affect[s] our relationship with our users,” critics argue the resources devoted to blocking the ads would be better spent on functional tools that reduce problematic use and protect users under 13. As of the latest check, a few of the deleted ads still appear in Meta’s Ad Library, illustrating the ongoing tension between platform policy, legal accountability, and user safety.
