Il pilota bolognese, poi diventato dominatore dell’handbike e leggenda dello sport paralimpico, ha ispirato migliaia di atleti in tutto il mondo. Ma nel giorno della sua morte, Bebe Vio in un messaggio sul suo profilo Instagram svela come le parole di Zanardi siano state decisive anche per la sua carriera, che l’ha portata ad essere schermitrice e campionessa paralimpica.
“Mi hai dato la forza per ripartire, convincendomi che con o senza gambe avrei potuto fare tutto“, ricorda Bebe Vio, postando anche delle foto insieme a Zanardi, durante le loro avventure paralimpiche. ” A Londra 2012 mi hai fatto conoscere la bellezza delle Paralimpiadi e l’enorme potere che hanno di cambiare la percezione e la Cultura della Disabilità. A Rio 2016 sei stato il mio cicerone nel villaggio paralimpico ed poi abbiamo realizzato il sogno insieme. A Tokyo 2020 non c’eri, ma eri un faro per tutti noi“.
Oggi tutto il mondo dello sport italiano piange la scomparsa del suo campione, capace – per usare le parole del presidente della Repubblica, Sergio Mattarella – di essere “punto di riferimento anche oltre il mondo dello sport“. Bebe Vio conclude: “É stato un onore e un grande privilegio averti avuto come tutor sportivo e di vita“.

We became colleagues in 2009, I was 12 years old and very lost and scared. This is how Bebe Vio remembers her encounter with Alex Zanardi, the champion who passed away today at the age of 59. The Bolognese pilot, who later became a dominant force in handbike racing and a legend of Paralympic sport, has inspired thousands of athletes around the world. But on the day of his death, Bebe Vio revealed in a message on her Instagram profile that Zanardi’s words were decisive, even for her career, which led her to become a fencer and Paralympic champion.
“You gave me the strength to start over, convincing me that with or without legs, I could do everything,” recalls Bebe Vio, posting photos alongside Zanardi during their Paralympic adventures. “At London 2012 you introduced me to the beauty of the Paralympics and the enormous power they have to change the perception and culture of disability. At Rio 2016 you were my guide in the Paralympic village and then we realized the dream together. At Tokyo 2020 you weren’t there, but you were a beacon for all of us.”
Today, the entire Italian sports world is mourning the loss of its champion, capable – as President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella put it – of being “a reference point beyond the world of sport.” Bebe Vio concludes: “It was an honor and a great privilege to have you as my sports and life tutor.”
