The greatest fraud that Meta has committed is convincing generations that without their platform there is no online social interaction.
The recent reporting from various outlets including @pluralistic Facebook’s fraud files makes a strong case for moving friends and family off of Meta platforms. But where to start, and how to avoid turning the fediverse into the next Facebook?
About a year ago while I was first exploring self-managed and then self-hosted socials I considered moving family members onto my instance. Unfortunately, doing so would neither scratch their itch for extreme right wing media due to my strict block list model, nor would it allow me to maintain the standards of conduct that I hold myself to on my own platform due to their poor online social habits. Even trolls and bigots deserve to be safe from predatory fraud and scams.
Accepting that social media is for many an addiction, I wonder what form of nicotine gum or methadone there might be on the fediverse. I am generally opposed to manipulative algorithms, but I can see a strong case for a tool that gradually adjusts one’s feed away from certain types of content. Of course I would love for them to see others and the world the way I do, but I am not as concerned with changing their ideology as much as I am with removing the influences that drive them toward extremism.

Meta is earning a fortune on a deluge of fraudulent ads
"Meta projected 10% of its 2024 revenue would come from ads for scams and banned goods, documents seen by Reuters show. And the social media giant internally estimates that its platforms show users 15 billion scam ads a day. Among its responses to suspected rogue marketers: charging them a premium for ads – and issuing reports on ’Scammiest Scammers.’"
