Admins of Fediverse: any thoughts on this UK age verification bonanza? What's the apropriate response? 0 tollerance for lewd accounts/servers? Purge the server from UK users? Implement AI moderators and whatever bullshit governmental software is needed? Let the brits brit and 🤷‍♂️? Onion routing? Organize and hit the streets (it's likely around the corner for most nations)?

@daj @joel @gotosocial Thanks for creating TagPush, David! I appreciate the work you're putting into solving the small instance discovery problem.

You're absolutely right about FediBuzz being erratic - I've noticed that too. Some days are content-heavy, others pretty quiet.

I actually tried both services and found different strengths:

TagPush: More reliable/consistent, but limited tag selection (totally understandable for a one-person project!)

FediBuzz: Broader tag coverage (I need things like #proxmox, #docker, #fediadmin and also #nrw and other hashtags for local content), but yeah, the reliability can be hit-or-miss.

For my use case I ended up sticking with FediBuzz mainly because I need some specific tech/local tags that aren't available on TagPush yet. But I really like TagPush's consistent delivery approach - that "fire-hose" problem you mention with relays is real!

Question: Are you planning to expand the tag list, or keeping it intentionally curated to maintain quality? I'd love to see tags like #docker, #proxmox, #homelab if that fits your vision!

Really appreciate both services existing - competition/alternatives are always good for the ecosystem! 🚀

i would never do fully open signups on one of my instances lol. the extra moderation workload is MASSIVE and for basically zero reward. it takes like five seconds to vet and approve a new user. it takes far longer to clean up the damage a shitload of spam accounts can do

friendly reminder to all #CyberSyndicate users to report spam and such when you see it! this helps the mod team ban them and stop them from pestering anybody else on our instances :3

i guess this goes for peeps on other instances too! your mods hopefully give a fuck!!!

Ich glaube, es wäre hilfreich, automatisch keine Neu-Accounts mehr zuzulassen, die mit „mastodon“ anfangen. Das sind dann wohl immer die mit der angeblichen „account verification“.

If every Mastodon instance used up-to-date versions with registrations that needed approval, the spam waves would be greatly reduced.

But there are a lot of abandoned servers, outdated servers or instances with no interest in changing the way users register.

Not to mention that any spammer could start their own disposable server.

But even in an ideal world, I think the targets would switch to other platforms like the Misskey forks.

And it's also really tedious to read justifications and approve accounts.

Another day, another several hundred phishing spam accounts to remove...

Open registration instances are going to be the death of the fediverse.

Just today I have already blocked and reported about 5 accounts from the spam wave pretending to be from the “Mastodon staff” and asking for fake account verifications.

I would like to suggest that the administrators reading this change the registration mode from open to pending approval.

Watch out #Fediadmin ! A wave of phishing spammers is heating our summer in the fediverse. We just wiped out some here at sociale.network (thanks to @oblomov who spotted and reported them).

I tag in this alert also @Gargron because they are also impersonating some "Mastodon Support Team" with alleged "account verification process" and i see also a potential reputational damage.
