Reminds me of that time I tried to sign up to #Bluesky and they immediately asked for government issued ID.
Nope.

RetroAchievements makes a really fucking dumb moderation choice allowing a clear hate/nazi game hack. Owner quickly says "we fucked up, we'll do better, my bad".
As shit as it is that happened, I wish Bluesky would learn something from RA's fuckup instead of doubling down repeatedly on their own.
When you moderate a community of any size, mistakes are going to happen, whether by the owner or the moderators they choose. Good communities learn from their mistakes and try to do better. We'll see if RetroAchievements lives up to their words, while Bluesky's leadership taunts their users instead.
in the wake ofthe latest BS with #bluesky I've finally figured out why so many of the people I'd love to follow here, moved there. it's actually not them.
If you're a comedian, a writer or a journalist, you might not actually have time for a big feed. what you want is for people to be able to find and follow *you*.
but unless you have a big feed (follow lots of people), that won't happen. other instances won't federate you.
your best bet is a giant instance like mastodon.social … which is a bit shit.
Watching today's CEO meltdown like a weary Kirsh from Alien:Earth....

I saw the bs from the start. When I signed up for it 2 years ago and read about atproto and federation, I sat there wondering so what’s so “decentralized” about this? I’m still on Bluesky. They still own my “keys”. I can’t see Mastodon or any other Fediverse posts and need a bridge just to do that. When I confronted one of their devs about we’re not really owning our accounts, I got a smartass reply that I could just move to another PDS … but back then there was no info on how to move to a PDS other than some dev docs that the average person would never be able to understand. I fumbled through the one million Linux commands for hours before I eventually gave up.
Now there are Bluesky PDS hosts, so that’s not an issue anymore, but there is still no Bluesky-provided tool to migrate accounts. There are only, as you said, third-party randos who were nice enough to create PDS migration tools, and they likely may not be able to handle large loads of migration requests.
And now I’m learning as of yesterday, even if you’re on you’re own, self-hosted PDS, your account still isn’t technically off Bluesky because they still own your DID that was created with did:plc. So if their plc infrastructure gets taken down, for whatever reason, government requests they shut down, etc. everyone, whether on Bluesky or self-hosted PDS who has a DID starting with did:plc, also get shut down, which would be pretty much everyone. The only way to not be affected if that happens, is to have a DID starting with did:web from your own host, which the PDS software doesn’t assign by default. You have to know how to change your own server to create did:web DIDs and again, the documentation for it is all over the place in developer jargon which no non programmer will ever understand. All accounts, whether created on Bluesky or not, are assigned did:plc’s so we’re still screwed. So, again, you’re right back at square one with not really being off Bluesky’s platform and not really owning your account.
I’m so tired. I already self-host my account but now need to figure out how to get my server to create did:web accounts. I just want to own my account as “advertised”.

I see things are going well over at #BlueSky. 🙄
I can’t help but feel vindicated for my ultimate decision to not touch #Bluesky even though my reason was different than this; I couldn’t get past the captcha to even get an account created. So oftentimes if someone posts something here from there I never see it. I’m just glad I’m here and not there. https://social.chinwag.org/@FediThing/115311583160164447
#bluesky just told me I had switched my account to "joseph tricomo" but I only have 1 account; so i looked myself up on bluesky in case there might be a fraud me there. the result was surprising. (p)

A blog publishing manga reviews with a political analysis, explaining harmful tropes and globally finding great readings to suggest (or titles to avoid):

Considering the manga industry rampant misogyny you can expect a focus on feminism.
This intro is redrafted after connecting to BridgyFed, but can people on Bluesky see that?
I would love to connect with like-minded manga enthusiasts and have people joining to publish together.

Self-hoster here.
tl;dr server: $6-$11/mo; domain: $6-$10/year
Here is all that is involved with paying for your own instance per month. This is what I pay so ymmv:
Server: $6-$11/mo
I rent my Bluesky PDS server from DigitalOcean. They were the cheapest I found and already come premade. They charge by the bandwidth you use ($0.009 /hour) with a base price of $6/mo so your price will vary per month depending on your traffic, or any addons you might want to add like daily automatic backups, but still comes out cheaper than getting a VPS through a regular host. Your first month will always be the highest because of creating your accounts, if you need to do anything else, like rebooting the server, install more software, doing backups, etc.
Domain: $6-$10/year
Domain registrars are cheap and charge annually. Price depends on the TLD (.com, .org, .net, etc.) you choose. Just make sure you choose one that has forever privacy like Namecheap so your personal info doesn’t get blasted across the internet.
SMTP Relay: Free
What people don’t talk about, and what I found out on my own the hard way, is that you also need an SMTP relay provider as well so you can send emails from the PDS. The SMTP relay enables the ability for your PDS to send out emails for password resets, email changes, invite codes, account verifications, etc. Your PDS accounts will still work without an SMTP relay because you can always just log into your PDS server to change accounts manually but that will get tedious. Also you won’t be able to verify your email and some atproto/Bluesky users are on servers that block other users without verified email addresses, so I suggest setting this up. Also, if you plan on running multiple people on your instance, you will need SMTP relay anyway. I’d say it’s medium difficulty setting it up if you’re a complete novice to Linux commands. Resend offers 1 SMTP relay for free with one domain.
Unsure if it be single-user instance or if I want multiple people on my instance.
The minimum resources PDS server can host up to 10 accounts. But I personally suggest not hosting other people because legal implications get involved. Unless you completely trust they won’t post something crazy, I wouldn’t do this. If they post something out of pocket and they get investigated, the cops are going to be calling YOU, not them, to turn over their information because their data is living on your server. But if you want to take on those responsibilities, I suggest researching all that’s involved legally first.
And finally, if you plan to self-host, if you already have an account on Bluesky, you’ll need to decide if you want to migrate that existing account over to your own PDS or just start over brand new on it. If you want to migrate, you can using the PDS Moover tool. Be aware that the PDS Moover isn’t failsafe though. It seems to work well with Bluesky accounts with not that many posts or content on it, but it struggles handling larger ones. I had a 2 year old Bluesky account with over 1200 posts and my account crashed in the migration so I lost everything and had to start fresh. However, my smaller Bluesky account migrated without a hitch. The tool works perfectly otherwise, but all this stuff is still in new development so I expect more reliable tools to be developed in the future.
Sorry for this post being so long but I wanted to make sure I covered everything since I know us self-hosters are unicorns and there’s not much user-friendly info out there about atproto/Bluesky yet. Much of this I had to fumble through on my own the hard way with no help.
But hope this helps and good luck!
What’s the factor when you’re planning to self-hosted a instance?
