When picking a mastodon server make sure to pick a big server like mastodon.social.
Bigger instances usually have a sustainable funding model to keep the servers running. There are lots of defunct smaller mastodon instances already where people had to move servers or worse lost their data.
many people spread the tip to pick a mastodon instance according to your interests, but always check the funding model first! 💸

in my month on #Mastodon i'm very happy i'm now here. I get more engagement here when i ask questions than i ever got on #bsky even tho i went from 1.4k followers to none
& i'm learning about the #fediverse which i was completely unaware of
this feels like a good space to be. tho i said that of bsky for the first 5 months, & i've only been here 1. 😁💙

i've made numerous requests to #bluesky but they won't give me any of the work i created & posted.
& scrapers haven't worked, i assume bc my acct is locked down.

yup
that's some of the drama i was alluding to up top
but the point is how it is handled
on the #fediverse, there can be drama wars and servers suspend other instances and accounts
that's actually pretty bad for the fediverse
but:
it keeps trucking
fractured in some way, hopefully with healing
meanwhile on #bluesky it's corporation central
meaning there is no reprieve
you get a pass (when you shouldn't) or you get a block (when you shouldn't) and there is no recourse

I do not know what the answer is. Mastodon seems like a step in the correct direction.
However, I think a lot of people (most?) actually want the algorithm to force content in front of their faces. I think that is one of the appeals of tiktok and twitter. They get a little dopamine hit from some short, exciting thing.
Not sure what to do about that myself.
