RE: mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra

Exactly. Pointing out that #Bluesky isn't *practically* decentralized yet is not a critique, it's a statement of the work they need to do. (and I wish them luck!)

Mastodon has its own demons to slay. No one is perfect here! We're just talking about how things should improve. I so don't want us to form a circular firing squad. We can all win.

@quillmatiq @mike @mmasnick

Feel like whenever this discussion is joined people start talking past each other.

It may be the case that the ATmosphere can be decentralized. And there may be small scale projects which test this potentiality. But the fact remains that it remains highly centralized.

Rob Ricci @ricci has developed a metric to address this matter

The purpose is not to dump on #Bluesky, but rather to establish meaningful context for these discussions.

Really interesting things afoot in social media. It seems like "W", a newly announced "European alternative to X" is actually a fork of the Bluesky code, and is, at least for now, kind of part of the Bluesky AT Proto network. (Thanks to @quillmatiq for the explainer.)

And, apparently #Bluesky board member @mmasnick really doesn't like the idea.

It will be fascinating to see how this develops.

I haven't deleted my Bluesky account, just deactivated it, because it has over 3 years worth of posts and media I don't want to lose (need to figure out a good way to export all that).

Every now and then I reactivate it temporarily to copy something from my timeline. And every time I do this new people follow me there, it's so weird.

@sheislaurence good topic. I also deactivated my 2.1K account on just week ago, when I saw verified accounts of both ❄ and JD Vance on there. 2.1K followers maybe cool for me as an artist, but the idea of being on the same platform with ❄ and Vance, official accounts of Republican Party & including many government officials of Iran's Mullah Regime not feels right and maked me unsafe & uncomfortable. So deactivated my Bluesky account and came here on . & already I feel safe here

RE: flipboard.social/@TechDesk/115

@aslakr it's looking like they could be using Bluesky's code for this based on "leaked screenshots" and there being a PDS at pds-prod.wsocial.eu/

Don't know how that will work with their ID and real name requirements. One option would be that it is entirely separate but one of the supposed screenshots seems to show a @verge post and a post by @queerash.wsocial.eu (same as queerash.bsky.social) from Bluesky with same comment/boost/like counts.

RE: flipboard.social/@TechDesk/115

#SocialMedia outside of American corporate and government control is good. But… "Many have moved on from platforms like X and #Instagram, but even the alternatives, from #Bluesky to Mastodon, are US-controlled. W is designed to remain squarely under European ownership.”

Huh? How is #Mastodon under US-control? The main developer is a German company and anyone anywhere can spin up Mastodon instances outside of the control of that company.

Check your facts @PCMag! Better #tech #journalism please!
