そう言えば、私のブリッジアカウントがBlueskyで凍結されていて、Blueskyで見られなくなっているのだけど、これって、Blueskyには限らないのだな。
mastodon.social では凍結されずに利用できているけれど、他のインスタンスでブロックされる可能性はあるわけで、分散型あるあるなのかもしれない。

Nach dem Grok-/Deepfake-Skandal auf X fordert die EU, europäische Social-Media-Alternativen aktiv zu fördern: staatliche Unterstützung für private Initiativen, Innovation sowie echte Daten- und Inhaltsportabilität, damit Nutzer ihre Plattform wechseln können, ohne erneut in Abhängigkeiten oder neue Lock-ins zu geraten.
Mit "Eurosky" entsteht daraufhin wieder ein neues Projekt auf Basis des AT-Protokoll – architektonisch teil-dezentral, praktisch derzeit aber stark plattformzentriert.
Noch ferner in der Zukunft liegt W Social, das ebenfalls eine unabhängige Alternative zu X sein und den Einsatz von Bots vollständig ausschließen will.
Dabei gibt es mit Mastodon längst eine europäische Plattform, die genau diese Prinzipien lebt, aber bis heute an Reichweite und Sichtbarkeit scheitert.
Für mich wird hier Technik gebaut, um ein Nutzungs- und Förderproblem zu kaschieren. Neue Plattformen allein ändern daran wenig.

It seems there are fully hosted and self-hosted options for ATProto/Bluesky now, I stand corrected on that front.
Out of curiosity I looked into what it would take to build my own social media service on top of ATProto. The technical architecture is interesting, but... what would I actually gain?
I chose Mastodon back in 2022 when Bluesky was still invite-only and had no self-hosting story. ActivityPub is a W3C standard. Mastodon gGmbH is a non-profit. The Fediverse has years of proven independent operation across thousands of instances.
Bluesky PBC is a US for-profit company that controls protocol development, although they have made statements about wanting independent governance. Yet the network remains heavily centralized with most users on bsky.social.
Running my own Mastodon instance already gives me sovereignty. ATProto doesn't offer more of that, arguably less given the current state of things. Not saying people shouldn't build on it. But for someone already running independent Fediverse infrastructure, it's hard to see what value it would add. I didn't see the appeal back then and I don't see it now.

I was just on BlueSky to see one specific post from one specific person, no account needed. But while I was there I noticed the list of trending hashtags:
1. Mets Trade
2. Swerve Strickland
3. AEW Dynamite
4. Kenny Omega
5. AEW Championship
So 2-5 are all about All Elite Wrestling. (And yes, I had to do searches on AEW and those names.)
And then I checked Mastodon, and these are the top hashtags seen on my instance:
1. MentorAMovieOrPlay — a hashtag game
2. CheesyEggCorns — another hashtag game
3. MusicWomenWednesday
4. WhiskersWednesday
5. MeerMittwoch
Quite the difference. I like it here.

The number of people on fedi basically represents the number of people who care about social media being decentralized. You have to in order to do the extra bit of work to figure it out and then accept the smaller audience and less popular accounts.
That's not true with #bluesky. Most of the people there have chosen it cause it's just as easy to use as the other corporate platforms, it has enough users of the kind they care about and they believe it can't go evil like Twitter did.
