Theoretically yes, but in practice basically all users depend on and are affected by the block without having the technical expertise or willingness to circumvent it. On the other hand users are distributed over many instances making their own decisions.
and both support decentralization, but in practice is decentralized, is centralized.

There's a whole thread happening over at Eugen's place re: what even is decentralization maaaan

So the thing is, in practice, AP isn't actually decentralized. What it's done is replace one center with many that are even less scrutable. This is not in any way an improvement.

I used to be a big fan of AP

Not being able to see art anymore on tech dot LGBT due to The Art Instance™️ being run by a tyrant was the first big crack in my liking the AP fediverse. It revealed how centralized it really is. Meanwhile Bluesky builds AT and all the tooling to moot the company and its potential power.

AT still has potential. AP is hard locked to a certain course unless some massive disruption happens internally. Its potential, timeline-wise, was where AT is now, not almost 10 years in. I don't see it happening in a world where it peaked at ~3m and doesn't seem to grow any. The million active users it has are the million it will have for the foreseeable future.

No, of course that has never been my argument (it would also be a silly argument since hundreds of millions of users can access the ).

My argument is mastodon.social/@folkerschamel

ActivityPub for WordPress. Lessons learned(?) by an “early” adopter.

I joined the Fediverse as @NickBohle on Oct 28, 2022. With the rel=me link it was quite simple to verify my account, but little did I know about the Fediverse.

Weeks / months later I found and installed the plugin “ActivityPub” by Matthias Pfefferle to federate nickbohle.de.

When I installed the plugin, I didn’t realize that choosing the author profile (which I initially picked) had any consequences. I should have chosen the blog profile instead.

The correction of the […]

I'm trying to get through the backlog of bugs and features in my to-do list. Release v2.4.10 of Ktistec packages up several important improvements. The most impactful change is graceful server shutdown—I've never had a problem with shutdown leaving the database in a broken state, but prevention is the best cure.

I'm considering adding lightweight multi-user support (invitation-only, not open registration). I'm interested in your thoughts on whether this would be useful.

If at least some #Threads now have the option to make their posts viewable by #ActivityPub users, how come I don't see any Threads posts in my Federation feed?

I wonder if more people would understand #decentralization if it were explained in the more relevant terms of legal jurisdiction rather than in technical terms.

In sum: because the #fediverse is not a single company, not every service provider (instance owner) is subject to the same laws. An instance owner with his person, business, and hardware in, say, Nicaragua doesn't need to worry about legal consequences for violating a #Mississippi law requiring age verification. And because the law only applies to websites, users are in the clear.

Of course, that isn't as family-friendly as the tech explanation and makes the normies feel like they're buying drugs on the Silk Road.

@rysiek #BlueSky isn't decentralized, in the same sense mastodon.social isn't decentralized. It's just one service on the #ATprotocol, just like mastodon.social is just one service on the #ActivityPub protocol.

@davew

but doesn't the web imply certain protocols like HTTP? what's special about social media is the boost that enables extreme virality. when decentralized, it allows the public to rival/surpass mass media as determiners of what gets attention. that's essential to restore democracy in an age of big money media and advertising.

the web means open, not a corporate silo. social should mean boostable. thus #SocialWeb. #ActivityPub is a W3C standard afaik.

T’as des exemples? C’est peut être aussi une question de federation mais ma compréhension du protocole #ActivityPub est trop limitée pour comprendre

I think it's funny how the first step of choosing an instance effectively functions as a basic intelligence/patience test for new entrants into the #Fediverse.
