Recently there has been a lot of discourse about ActivityPub and AT Protocol which has been quite dividing and heated.

Yesterday at the Social Web CG meeting (the group that maintains the ActivityPub and related specifications), I proposed releasing a statement that counters the narrative that one of these protocols must win, when both protocols can co-exist and have a lot to learn from each other.

The statement has been co-signed by various members of both Social Web CG, SocialCG, and the AT Protocol community.

“We do not win by tearing each other down, which only emboldens and empowers those who do not want either protocol to succeed.”

“Arguing between us only emboldens those that seek to derail and destroy efforts to build an open social web.”

You can read the full statement here:

@vlc29 I appreciate the support and will continue!

I'm making great progress and will make Loops a proper PWA so you don't need to install the app to take advantage of all our features

Loops is proof that you can have a gorgeous open source alternative, and our waitlist on loops.video keeps on growing!

Let's show the world how decentralized social media can thrive outside the walled gardens of big tech

It's time for platforms that respect ppl and foster genuine community

Big thanks to @trankten for suggesting i18n in Loops + helping with Spanish translations for their loops.one instance!

Working with amazing fediverse admins is what makes Loops thrive. ❤️

No One’s Listening to Your Tech Rants

I wonder if these tech people who go on long monologues about software they hate or whatever discourse is happening in the tech space realize they’re getting muted, blocked, and added to mute lists by like 90% of people.

That’s why you get no engagement. You’re insufferable. I really wonder if they know how annoying they are. At least I have the decency to put it in a blog post when I do it. I’ve had to block—no joke—the 50th account. Maybe you wouldn’t be so miserable if you talked to real people offline.

Muting The Word BlueSky

Well, that’s enough of that. I’m nosy, so I’m curious about what people are saying about Bluesky. Nope. Enough of that. Not doing it. The propaganda around social media, in general, is so fucking bad.

I think I’ll just add Bluesky to my muted words list, along with the domains for bridges. In my opinion, Bluesky isn’t the problem; rather, antisocial personalities are. ActivityPub essentially connects a collection of sites with their own rules and tight moderation. Because of that, antisocial personalities who have a hard time conforming to cultural norms tend to get their accounts suspended, unless they have their own instance, quickly.

This is a people problem, not a technology problem. The issue are their personalities. The issue is not the protocol.

I think this has created a wave of resentment, with people gravitating toward the leopards waiting to eat their faces. I have my own mental health issues, and I really don’t want to deal with theirs. So, Bluesky goes on my 10-layered muted words list.

Trying Out The New Block Feature

So, one of the most frustrating things about a WordPress federated blog was the inability to actually block people on ActivityPub. You could keep their comments from showing up on your site's posts; however, they could still interact with your content in the fediverse. With the latest update, the developers added the ability to block actors on ActivityPub. I’ve been wanting to try it out, but I didn’t have anyone in mind—until now. Luckily, I do. Let's see if it works. Fediverse Reactions

@jensimmons Would asking for custom protocol handler support across all browsers be appropriate? Or standardizing a web+AP handler for #activitypub being baked into browsers by default?

I'm going to stop going down this rabbit hole. I am just trying to debug this error on my server, so I am bored. From what I gather, people on #Bluesky seem to really hate #ActivityPub because of the moderation. They dislike that instances have local moderation and agency. That's the issue.

@gardiner_bryant For your excellent posts over at gardinerbryant.com, have you considered adding the ability to comment, like and boost via #ActivityPub? 🤔 :fedi:

I have been flirting with the idea of setting up a #selfhosted #Mastodon server since I first read about #ActivityPub, but I was put off by the lack of community that you have running your own.

I joined mastodon.ie and had a whale of a time, and once I had built up a set of accounts I followed and even interacted with from time to time, I figured it was time to set sail on my own.

So far so good, imported all of my following lists from the two main servers I used. My timeline is bangin!
