Another motivation for creating Retejo is this:

mastodon.social/@reiver/114076

I want to be able to write long-form articles using whatever text-editor I choose to use, editing a file, and using git.

Not everyone will want to create long-form content this way — but I want to create long-form content this way.

I kept that type of user in mind when designing Retejo —

That some people want to write in Markdown rather than HTML.

So, Retejo has native support for Markdown.

And, in particular, CommonMark with the GitHub Flavored Markdown (GTM) extensions that most people expect nowadays.

One thing I noticed about the Gemini-Protocol community is that —

Some of the people who are attracted to Gemini are attracted to it, because — they want a Web that was based on Markdown instead of HTML.

And, the Gemini-Protocol + gemtext seemed close to being a Markdown-based Web.

One of my other passions, in addition to the Fediverse and Social Web, is — small-net.

One of the popular protocols in small-net is — the Gemini-Protocol.

Retejo

I have been working on a new type of web-server for serving static web-sites.

I started working on it recently — on August 23rd. But, have had the idea for it for a number of years.

...

What is different about this web-server for static web-sites‽

Well, of course, it supports HTML.

But, it also supports Markdown, and ActivityPub natively!

@MOULE Exactly 💯. Unfortunately, I believe the only way to combat this is to support and educate people on anonymous cyber security, open source alternatives, and service decentralization. I love that / does practically all three of these. 😆❤️

Embedding #Mastodon posts or tag timelines on #WordPress was easy (providing someone else did the heavy lifting, of course) 😄

Thank you @w101 #Mastodon and #ActivityPub

I've spent a couple of weeks exploring new #CSS territory, displaying the posts in a pretty 'pinteresque' column layout.

While ensuring reasonable #Accessibility.

A low speed, #noai, focused side mini-project, made with love to #opensource and the #fediverse, and it was a lot of fun.

#ActivityPub #blockchain #opensource #DirittiDigitali

By the way, if anyone wants to create an #ActivityPub #bot server, there's also @botkit as an option.

It has been about a year since I implemented ActivityPub on my web site, and I joined roughly around the same time in 2023 on another instance. I had a “blog”, which has RSS support built-in, and I think I only know of one person who follows it.

But I let it languish and had not written any new posts in years, only updating the site and writing small posts.

I had ideas though. At first, I was going to switch my site to writing bad haiku, but again I procrastinated for... Uhhh... Years.. But after I started engaging with the Fediverse over 2023 I realized that reading and engaging with people was the motivation that I needed to get back to writing.

And so I started the long process of learning how to implement ActivityPub on my existing web site (from scratch).

Ironically I still have RSS and I could follow more blog posts in the same mechanism that I use to browse the Fediverse on my site, but I am too lazy. The organic nature of finding new people to follow based on who I am already following is much easier for me. Though I still have a long way to go and I need to continue to follow more people.

So from a non-technical perspective, I am not sure if I would have started writing randomly again with only RSS that I already had for two reasons:

  1. I find the browsing RSS feeds in clients to be overwhelming to my inbox.
  2. I am really bad at finding and subscribing to RSS feeds, but I am a little better at following people organically on the Fediverse.
