BOJ (Baekjoon Online Judge), a big competitive programming site in Korea, says it's shutting down on April 28. It has been around since 2010 and, as far as I know, has mostly been one person's work the whole time. The notice doesn't say why. The rumor is that the server bills finally got too high.

What caught my eye is that some people in the Korean #fediverse, including @2chanhaeng, are already talking about whether a federated replacement could work, with #ActivityPub coordinating things and volunteer nodes doing the judging. I have no idea if that can really work, since timing differences between machines are a serious problem in competitive programming, and I'm not the right person to help with it. Still, I like that the first reaction was to try building something.

@renchap @sovtechfund Thank you for your hard work! Apropos, if you know anyone trying to automate the fight against disinformation, NATO sometimes offers funding for research in this area (or sometimes adjacent areas of benefit to the organisation). I only mention it because it's the sort of capability that I imagine citizens of the fediverse might enjoy. Thanks again! #NATO #fediverse #activitypub #disinformation

@gary From what i understand ( and Im no expert) the theory of #ap is good, the practicality of it in the real world is hightly centralised. #activitypub is not perfect but self hosting a server for you, your family and friends is relatively simple. If you ever feel the need to change friends/family - yournactivitypub server will be the least of your issues.

Id like to see a #activitypub server (amd other self hosted apps running on most home internet connections in my lifetime.

@bkuhn

Interesting. I am not sure what the extent of support is for #i18n and #l8n across the #ActivityPub fediverse. I am not sure how you mean exactly.. mixed language content in a single post? I am also thinking of things like posting in 2 or more languages at the same time, where the client UI picks the most appropriate language, and there is a default for fallback.

(Update: Parent post updated to clarify further)

I am looking for some #localFirst solution for blog authoring what would publish (all or some) posts to an activityPub server like to a relay, with publishing of new versions of posts as updates.
And fetch new posts, comments, mentions, messages, and reactions arrive to my local-first thing as a Feed or an Inbox.
Sounds like I want "Fido with formatting and attachments" over #ActivityPub .
The #Fido part is avoid need to be "always online", but sync that few times per day when have time for it

Well sh*t. On the Fediverse, have you ever thought someone was annoying for being too lazy to scroll up a thread to read the context?

Welp, it turns or not all clients show all posts, but to make matters worse it may not be a bug. 馃

As an example, my go-to mobile client Tusky appears to split threads when you change the audience. I could have swore it didn't do that, but at least one conversation I've been a part of only showed the "Follower-Only" posts, orphaning itself from the public thread.

馃槼... I'm embarrassed to have only now realized this. No doubt I've unnecessarily asked folks for details they assumed were a scroll up away. 馃う

Mastodon advantages, and the federated network, using the ActivityPub protocol...

I found this explanation easy to understand:

blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/06/

If Mastodon or any other federated service fails, you could resume your personal network on another service, IF you still have access to the domain name tied to your identity. If access to the domain name is taken away, you would lose your network. The domain name is the limiting factor, not the service.

My technical know-how falls short by a long way and I'm having a little trouble figuring out whether I get what I want from the Fediverse. By my limited understanding AT Protocol allows for a 'nomadic' id/datastore (PDS) but with ActivityPub, the nearest we get to that is by having your own instance of an app of your choice and plugging it in/out of other peoples, but your data can only really live in *your instance of *that app??
