I, myself, also fell for a scam on the Fediverse — Sharkey.

I ended up giving 1,000 bucks because the developers claimed they needed a new physical server, and they also said they were going to create a professional “Join Sharkey” website where you could find Sharkey instances.

In total, they tricked not just me, but more than a few others — over 2,000 bucks. They ended up using that server as their personal PC to play Minecraft, and when enough people called them out on their nonsense, they suddenly claimed there was “new” management.

Eventually, over a year later, they deleted their old account and moved to a different Fedi instance. When they still couldn’t escape what they had done, they finally made that “Join Sharkey” website — only it doesn’t help you find Sharkey instances. Instead, it just lists 15 sites run by their close friends. I guess that counts as "helping". 🤣

The Fediverse is soft on scammers!

I noticed this earlier this year when I called out a scammer who kept making up stories. They lost track of their lies — first asking for money for their mother's funeral, then later claiming their father was trying to buy medication for their mom.

And that wasn’t the only inconsistency. For example, they said they needed money for rent, but less than a week later, they claimed they needed help with the mortgage on their house.

There was a lot of pushback when I exposed that scammer. And when you point out the Gaza scammers — more pushback.

I have been, and continue to be, of the view that the "fight" between #ActivityPub and #ATproto is a distraction.

Whether one is "more distributed" or "more decentralized" is, at best, a technical criticism based on de jure analysis that has little bearing on the practical, practiced reality of most people using these platforms.

There is value in that criticism on a _technical, de jure_ level.

But the moment you touch what this looks like in practiced reality it serves everyone poorly to set us _against_ each other.

Don't like how they are doing things?

Cool. Let's talk about how we can get the things we want ported over there, rather than denigrating people who want those features or saying that trivial interface features are part of "the mindset that led to Trump" or whatever.

Added support for following people on the Fediverse from my personal GoBlog instance last week. Didn’t know at the time, but a whole can of new worms was opened… Itches

Release v2.4.14 of Ktistec is small in terms of features and fixes, but it improves in two areas where I thought Ktistec was weak: light/dark mode support and autosave.

I'm not hardcore dark mode, but I do prefer it in some cases. Ktistec selects light or dark mode based on the browser or system setting—there is currently no means to select the mode directly. A nice side effect of light/dark mode support is that custom theming support comes nearly for free.

Ktistec was meant for writing. I post my fair share of one-line bits of wisdom, but I started building Ktistec because I wanted a space to write long form, and existing Fediverse platforms were more for social interaction. When writing long form, autosaving is an essential feature. Ktistec will now autosave draft posts and replies. If you navigate away before publishing, you can always find the incomplete draft in the Drafts collection which is accessible from your timeline page.

Your account is managed by your instance. You can't use it to login to other instances.

You can use your #Fediverse identity to communicate via #ActivityPub to people on other instances.

Unless, you want to use specific features of other instances (that may use different server software and/or configurations), you don't need to login to other instances.

If is and uses then why do I need an account? Why can't I login with my Mastodon account? That's my identity, I don't want yet another account to keep track of.

@pfefferle does the ActivityPub plugin have controls for allowing/blocking quote toots yet?

I'm assuming not yet, as I think it would be in this section

Meine Gedanken heute:
