I took over a sub that was frankly super toxic. Over the years, I realised that for a community to have healthy conversations you have to enforce it, and you have to model good discussions. It's hard work.
I've actually done most of what Anil recommends in this post. Most excellent read.

Elon Musk deprecated #hashtags, and made them count less in the exTwitter algorithm, but they remain useful here, and perhaps that is why you see things that had gone.
Another thing that makes exTwitter less useful is that they deprecated some of the things that made it useful in the first place. As a microblog, one of its major uses was to draw attention to web sites that you had visited and found interesting. But they pushed posts with links down in the rankings. I don't think Mastodon does that.

Props to Lucy Thomas from Project Rockit, the anti bullying social enterprise she founded with her sister Rosie. I went to the school of social entrepreneurs with Rosie, and they're both total passionate powerhouses when it comes to making a difference.

A VPN ban isn’t really meant stop you from using one. It means when they catch you doing so, they’ll use the fact you’re using this harmless technology itself as a *pretense* to lock you up without needing to do any “hard work” (i.e. an investigator’s job) like actually confirming whether you committed a real crime.
Don’t think you won’t be impacted just because you know how to outsmart an ISP filter! This is not a plan to protect children or stop you from consuming adult media. It is a ploy to eventually eliminate ALL freedom of expression and free access to information in the UK.
And the same goes for Chat Control and encrypted messengers, btw
