I don't know, as a Malaysian, I have long been cynical about the freedom of speech online. Because it allows bad actors to act with inpunity. During election season I shut the social media platforms down because I see so much toxic rubbish
I think the last straw for me was when I saw that these cybertroopers were mostly teens, and they were spreading calls for racial riots in the last election on TikTok.
Also, the inaction of these platforms, who do not care to stop them because they feel we don't matter. I remember watching the Rohingya genocide unfold, fueled by Facebook posts. I watched as TikTok videos by teenagers calling for racial riots in Malaysia if the "wrong party" wins.
The platforms, far away in the US, did nothing.
Freedom of speech, see.
Or maybe we just aren't important enough.
It changes your opinion of foreign-controlled social media like Facebook etc very quickly.

So I saw an account on Threads from a guy who says he deals with the Malaysian cybertrooper economy. Most of these orgs hire teenagers. 13-17 year olds, to spread misinformation, rumours etc. Malaysians have always been aware of the cybertroopers or "cyto" on social media during our general election. This guy says that the upcoming ban may affect this industry.
