Incredible. rc-gui's actual binary is missing. the icons have all changed. windows no longer have backgrounds...at all, they're fully transparent, which I assume must be a bug because it makes text unreadable on anything but flat plain wallpaper and no other open windows.

I'm glad I made a rootfs tarball, and wish I'd made it a full image backup, but this wasn't even a major upgrade, just a regular apt update. #raspberrypi OS is apparently no longer interested in being a serious stable desktop

I've finally ripped out every single "smart" thing in my place. So I no longer need Home Assistant and this, have a #raspberrypi 5 (4Gb) free.

Fellows, chums, buddies, degenerates all, what should I do with it? What fun projects should I use it for? I'm a mediocre computer toucher so any config, setup and programming is fine, good even!

I was thinking either a LoRA station (there are none near me), a Tor Relay (I'd need to also get a static IP from my ISP but that might be fine) or something like that.

@andyn
1) it's a valid question. That is
not a stupid question for a person who's new to Linux. Hope you enjoy your Linux journey hereafter!
2) to address the question posed, pre-requisite libraries and "dependencies" might vary across different
flavours (distros).
3) the Raspberry Pi OS builds on top of the distro called Debian (IIRC), and theoretically, any application working on Debian's ARM variant should work on it. The RPi OS additionally includes some niceties specific to the RPi. You can use it as a regular desktop computer.
4) it's better to stick to RPi OS for the Pi, but there are alternatives, such as Archlinux ARM.

@magdelenehall

A "computer for kids"?

It's clearly a #RaspberryPi; I have several. It was originally sold as an educational tool, perhaps, but is now used by millions of adults, factories, and sadly murderous Russians. It's not the computer's fault.

Trashy sensationalist journalism. For once, I'm glad I didn't bother to fight my way past all the iPaper's popups.

And in fact I just put #Debian Trixie #KDE version on a used #Thinkpad X1 Carbon, to replace a fried #raspberrypi , and it's pretty wonderful. I'll probably tweak it to be a little more like macOS, but the important thing is that KDE allows me to do that rather than deciding what's good for me.
