Something I consider personally pretty important as a new contributor: Make it clear to the maintainer what your skill level is. So they know when you're doing something weird, that's not you doing something really clever, but rather you not knowing what you're doing.
I'm currently working on a contribution for a PHP project, and I'm just utterly out of my depth. 😅
