@mmeier That level of zero-to-productive has been one of the foundations of #php since the beginning.

I had no idea that PHP even had a package management ecosystem, nor have I ever heard about composer (I think). But I still, instinctively, knew to look through the repo's root, and immediately knew that composer.json was a packaging tool config file, just from its shape, without knowing its exact syntax.

I'm not sure why, but somehow its really comfortable to enter an ecosystem I've never worked with before, and being able to feel my way into unit test execution.

Searching for "composer.json PHP" brought me straight to the composer docs, which explained how to install it.

Looking at the composer.json file again, I found "test" in the "scripts" section, and a short "php composer.phar --help" later, I had my commands:

php composer.phar install
php composer.phar test

Would it have been nicer if the project documented the basics a bit better? Yupp. But I was able to figure it out myself through simple discovery, a docs page and "--help".

Random thought I had today: Perhaps today's tech landscape isn't entirely bleak? I tried to do a small contribution to a PHP project today, but I've got zero experience with PHP or its ecosystem. The project itself lacked docs on how to run their test suite.

But even though I've never before done anything with PHP, all I needed to do was an "ls" on the repo root. There, I saw a composer.json. Opening it, it definitely looked like a packaging config file.
