@AnonBD @adulau @circl You are totally right, but the problem is in your post "knowledgeable programmer". To get the same safety guarantee you get in Rust (passed the learning curve) you need years of C/C++ development experience. Bug happen and will always happen, even for the best programmers in the world, because we all do mistakes. The problem is that many C/C++ bug classes can lead to a system compromise, with safe Rust things get much harder.

Performance wise, here is my take. This is true Rust is slower than C/C++ ! Yet you have to put that in perspective with what the language brings in term of safety guarantees (this has sometimes a little cost at runtime). Developing in C is like driving an old 500hp car without airbag/abs and a heavy non-deformable chassis VS developing in Rust being like driving a 450hp last generation car. I made my choice, I prefer safety over speed.

Even big tech companies which have bigger problems to solve than us are moving to Rust because the realized that developing Rust was 2x faster than developing in C/C++. Meaning that after a given amount of time of maintaining + fuzzing + auditing your C/C++ code base you had the time to rewrite the whole thing in Rust.

My personal belief is that now Rust has broken through, many of the C/C++ projects will move to Rust or another hypothetical competitor of it providing the same flexibility, speed and safety guarantees. If they don't they will very slowly move towards extinction (yes even kernels). We will always need very fast code written in C or assembly, yet this code should be reduced to the strict minimum to reduce the attack surface.

But what is awesome with #OpenSource is that the code base is available so that people needing to port something to a new language they can do it 😁
