OpenSSL 4.0 released April 14 with Encrypted Client Hello and post-quantum key exchange. The release also removes the Engine API for hardware crypto boxes (HSMs). Every HSM integration not migrated to the Provider API on 3.x is broken. Support ends May 14, 2027. I have architected 14 GDPR, ISO 27001, and ISO 13485 compliant platforms. In regulated work, an HSM behind a deprecated API stops being a tooling ticket once your auditor opens it.
