I have donated in the past, and it is an important channel for a couple of connections to reach me.
We are in the process of testing out current editions of #Tox, @Jami, others, for personal communications.
IoT, though, is going to be more complicated.

I'm pouring out a drink for the administrators of the Matrix.org homeserver who are looking to be in for a rough night after major database corruption. Best of luck with the restore, it'll probably be their longest outage for many years.
This does highlight the issues with federated platforms where a large majority stay on one server. Had more people been encouraged to spread out onto other (unaffected) servers, the impact would be far less.
