@adamgreenfield I stay on Mastodon because there are a few accounts I like. But it's definitely getting swamped by judgy "allies". I don't want to know about what people think of JK Rowling apropos of nothing. I don't want a passive-agressive comment on my post adding alt text (I'll block then delete and repost). And I certainly don't want people following me then asking for money.

#Mastodon has surprising reach. I wrote and published this essay yesterday; I have advertised it only in this one post, also, obviously, yesterday. I said it was incomprehensible and only for the incurably geeky, which is true.
This morning, after less than 24 hours, it has been requested from my server 391 times. That doesn't prove 391 people have actually read it, of course, but still...!

It's really hard to colour correct the photo for this drawing but it's pretty close.

Blades stand in close clusters, meeting what arrives and drawing it into their hold. At times a fierce force drives through them, tearing across their length, pressing them low and setting them into motion as a single body before they gather and rise again. Sand gathers at their bases and settles, held in place as it accumulates and rises in small shifts.
Each movement is taken in and returned more slowly, the surface lifting and holding as stems remain anchored within it. Light passes across the uneven forms, slipping between upright lines and tracing the subtle growth they make together.
What reaches them is not lost but held, and the shape of the dune is built in the holding.

I feel like such an asshole when some completely innocent, presumably lovely person occasionally bulk spams one of the hashtags I'm following and I just feel an overwhelming need to mute them. I'm so thankful for the temporary mute feature, because they don't deserve to be perma muted for sharing their interest. It's just that every time they've done so, so far, it's been overwhelming my timeline.

Ich bin dem Tag neuhier lange gefolgt. Da leider wirklich alle auf mastodon.social landen, nervt mich das nur noch. Und ich habe es satt, darauf hinzuweisen, dass das Fediverse nicht Mastodon ist und schon gar nicht die Instanz mastodon.social.
Versteht mich nicht falsch, aber im Fediverse läuft etwas gehörig schief. Diese Instanz hat 3,2 Millionen Registrierungen, davon sind 287.624 Accounts monatlich aktiv. Das widerspricht massiv dem dezentralen Ansatz des Fediverse. Ich meine gezielt diese Instanz und nicht den Dienst Mastodon. Mittlerweile sind mir die Gründe auch egal.
