Using a back-of-the-envelope calculation, what the calls "normies" are 99.8% of the population. In a normal distribution, being here is a statistically notable 3-sigma event🤣

Its not the case that (or ) are "dying", but in terms of actual impact: changing the online experience for the *vast* majority of people, its obviously zilch - as has always been

Yet maintaining faith in these proof-of-concept projects feels important. Its like protecting biodiversity🐘

Content warning:Long post about echo chamber

It seems that echo chamber is the key phrase of the day. Here's my take

Personally, I left Twitter because it was full of bullying and celebrity/influencer worship. I didn't fit in, and felt very uncomfortable.

I left Facebook when my friends and families posts started disappearing and an algorithm started feeding me things I should have interest in.

I haven't used any other social media, except the Fediverse where I have been accepted and feel comfortable, even though my introverted nature sometimes tells me to stop interacting and go back to lurking like on Twitter.

As social media goes, I have found a happy place. I follow what I want, block what I don't, and am really happy with the moderation of aus.social admins. Is it an echo chamber? To be honest, I don't care. I'm not going to the pub with a bunch of people I don't like the opinion of, and that's how I think of the Fediverse, a social environment, rather than a soapbox.

Anyway, I'll go back to talking about chess, and posting photos of Tasmania and cats. And thanks to all of you who happily tolerate me 🙂

I'm at the Open Science Retreat (#OSR26UK) this week, at the #CentreForAlternativeTechnology in #Machynlleth this week - surrounded by experimental #solar arrays (incl. some cool ones from "history") and it has reminded me about my account on solarcene.community (a #SolarPowered #mastodon instance) - time to dust that off and have a play!

@Hoffi

Piszę sobie bota do wykrywania botów (vibe Detroit: Become Human, heh) - i to konto aż świeci na czerwono. Jak ktoś ma instancje - to polecam zablokować. - `@tim@holm.community`

Podsumowanie z toola do OSINTu bot kont:

"""
`@tim@holm.community` Major Red Flags Summary:

1. AI-generated avatar — near certain based on visual analysis + stripped EXIF
2. 4,444 follows in 10 days — ~444 follows/day, classic follow-back farming
3. 294 followers from mass-following — inflated through follow-back reciprocity
4. Entire infrastructure pre-built — 5+ federated services for a 10-day-old account
5. PixelFed account pre-dates Mastodon by 3 weeks (Mar 7 vs Mar 28) with 0 posts — infrastructure was staged first
6. Openly discussed automation in early posts
7. Formulaic engagement comments — short, templated follow-up questions
8. Instance has only 15 users (mostly remote) — single-operator setup
9. Bio reads like LLM output — suspiciously specific niche terms crammed together (Incinolet toilets + acrylic concrete hyperbolic roofing + kubernetes in one bio)
10. Relay setup on day 1 — maximizing federation reach immediately
11. One apology post for ignoring someone's rejection and sending another follow request — suggests aggressive automated following hit a boundary

Vielen Dank, @wuschi 🙏

@artemis

I'm no expert on any of this but I'm thinking about

1. What's the difference between a real-life cafe that doesn't welcome brown people, marxists, women, muslim people .... and a mastodon instance that doesn't?

Is an instance more like someone's home, and so they have control over who can enter?

2. Are instances "public spaces" or "public squares" with the associated rights that we have and don't have eg privacy, as well as obligations not to hurt others?

I went through things with my family that were far beyond my age.
I carried heavy water containers for long distances and searched for work until my feet were sore and exhausted.
We slept for many weeks in hunger and deprivation.
Our days passed while we trembled from the cold.
Now, thanks to your support, we are in a better situation.
Please do not stop supporting us and do not leave us alone.

"Is #Mastodon an echo chamber?"

Well, isn't it rather a welcome retreat from the frenzy of that much bigger echo chamber with commercial megaphones everywhere, whose inhabitants aren't even aware they live in one?
