Mon instance #Mastodon
est à jour et est en v4.5.8 :

Using a back-of-the-envelope calculation, what the #fediverse calls "normies" are 99.8% of the population. In a normal distribution, being here is a statistically notable 3-sigma event🤣
Its not the case that #mastodon (or #bluesky) are "dying", but in terms of actual impact: changing the online experience for the *vast* majority of people, its obviously zilch - as has always been
Yet maintaining faith in these proof-of-concept projects feels important. Its like protecting biodiversity🐘
technically not a proper #Introduction, i already have post regarding that but this should have new peeps get to know me better, if you want a proper intro post: https://mastodon.social/@mrmasterkeyboard/116198403588876557
alright, nerdnextdoor's two truths and a lie.
which one is the lie?
Content warning:Long post about echo chamber
It seems that echo chamber is the key phrase of the day. Here's my take
Personally, I left Twitter because it was full of bullying and celebrity/influencer worship. I didn't fit in, and felt very uncomfortable.
I left Facebook when my friends and families posts started disappearing and an algorithm started feeding me things I should have interest in.
I haven't used any other social media, except the Fediverse where I have been accepted and feel comfortable, even though my introverted nature sometimes tells me to stop interacting and go back to lurking like on Twitter.
As social media goes, I have found a happy place. I follow what I want, block what I don't, and am really happy with the moderation of aus.social admins. Is it an echo chamber? To be honest, I don't care. I'm not going to the pub with a bunch of people I don't like the opinion of, and that's how I think of the Fediverse, a social environment, rather than a soapbox.
Anyway, I'll go back to talking about chess, and posting photos of Tasmania and cats. And thanks to all of you who happily tolerate me 🙂

I'm at the Open Science Retreat (#OSR26UK) this week, at the #CentreForAlternativeTechnology in #Machynlleth this week - surrounded by experimental #solar arrays (incl. some cool ones from "history") and it has reminded me about my account on solarcene.community (a #SolarPowered #mastodon instance) - time to dust that off and have a play!
🙏🙌 https://scilogs.spektrum.de/natur-des-glaubens/solarpunk-waermepumpe-memes-und-lob-dem-spd-oekosozialen-hermann-scheer-1944-2010/
I'm no expert on any of this but I'm thinking about
1. What's the difference between a real-life cafe that doesn't welcome brown people, marxists, women, muslim people .... and a mastodon instance that doesn't?
Is an instance more like someone's home, and so they have control over who can enter?
2. Are instances "public spaces" or "public squares" with the associated rights that we have and don't have eg privacy, as well as obligations not to hurt others?
