Mastodon (and other services) are hosted at my registered domain name, which has advantages. Example: No admin can suspend my account, which happened to me previously at another instance.
I pay a hosting provider a small monthly fee to host #Mastodon for me, and I am happy with their service so far.
However, big instances search the federation and find posts better.
Why do you feel that Mastodon.social is dead?

Vor über 10 Jahren habe ich mal darüber berichtet, wie ich diverse Web-Dienste bei mir lokal sichere. Davon ist fast nichts mehr, wie es war: Viele Dienste wurden umgebaut, manche haben sich verabschiedet, und generell läuft das alle nicht mehr auf einem Raspberry Pi, sondern als virtuelle Maschine auf meinem Proxmox-Server (das wäre mal ein Thema für sich...). One annoying thing about the Fediverse is the federation. Really.
When I want to search for a Mastodon post I read last week, you can be sure that I mostly will find mile long wordpress blog posts that contain those words.
I want a way to select only things posted on Mastodon.
Only I don't know if it was posted on Mastodon, it could be another implementation of AP.
Long story short, i hate searching the Fediverse. I never find what I want.
