okay so, today a few people brought up that they're seeing too many boosts of the same old shit on their timelines.
today i found out that the "group boosts in timeline" option (Preferences -> Other) does not work as users expect.
it's *supposed* to group all boosts of a post into a one-time post on your timeline. instead, it reposts something that has been boosted every 40 boosts. this understandably pisses people off when something gets boosted 400 times. (you'll see it ten times)
this is side-server behaviour that can't be changed client side. this means that if you make the following change, it will affect *all* users on your instance.

# or the tracking sets will grow forever
REBLOG_FALLOFF = 40
change reblog_falloff to something you think is rational. for me that's 800 because i can't stand seeing zero-effort memes. it *must* be equal/below the value of MAX_ITEMS.
save changes and restart your instance.
