People Don’t Know How to Actually Have Conversations on Social Media

I think the major breakdown with microblogging is that people don’t actually want to have conversations. Microblogging is a format that was specifically designed around how dialogue works: you say something, a person responds, and then you respond to that. It is not a monologue. And you tacitly, implicitly, or even explicitly invite others into the conversation.

For example, you might argue a point, make a statement, talk about your experience, and then request that others comment in the form of a question or some other prompt. Nowadays, people just use microblogging platforms to rant incoherently about whatever crisis they are in or whatever thing they are outraged about today. Then, they turn around and complain that they are not getting engagement. It’s like going on a date with someone where they talk about themselves for the entire date, ask you nothing about you, and then get upset that you are not participating in a conversation about them that makes no room for you. The lack of engagement is because they are creating a space others cannot participate in, because they’re not actually interested in speaking with people. They want affirmation and validation.

What prompted this was me going through a few people’s profiles on Mastodon and Bluesky. The norm is random, incoherent, incomprehensible bursts of rants, random political shares, and compulsive likes of porn. When people reply to them, there is no meaningful back-and-forth.

On the other side of it, people who weren’t implicitly invited to reply are ranting in other people’s threads. For example, this is shared through a social networking protocol (i.e., ActivityPub) such that microblogging software can access it; however, I am using blogging software (i.e., WordPress), and this is a blog post. It’s tacitly not intended to be a dialogue, though there is an implicit invitation for comments.

I think there is a mismatch between the specifications of the format and people’s expectations.

@DGI Really appreciated the presentation and discussion, especially the brief mentions of political economic theory, including Marxist ideas, and how to take advantage of big capital in a way that doesn't threaten the movement. Shout out #mastodon ! The discussion about AI translation tools helping with pan-African communication, I've been using LibreTranslate, which I think is our best current attempt at a FOSS (Free Open Source Software) solution toward these ends, but African language support is largely lacking so far. Would be great to see progress in terms of African languages in the #LibreTranslate project.

Hashtags in lists would be really cool, but apparently there has been an open issue in mastodon's repository since 2018, so not very hopeful about getting that: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

Guess a "workaround" is to follow certain accounts that boost posts with specific hashtags. Not the most flexible solution though.

The Qur’an is the only thing that survived the bombing of our home in Beit Hanoun.
I read from it every day and gather my children around me so they remember the warm home we lost,
and so they never forget that we have a home, a land, and that Palestine is ours.

Nice! It's been a while since I'd used the official #Mastodon #Android app, and I gotta say it has come a long way since '23.
Supports all features (duh) like quoting, supports multiple accounts (got all three of my accounts setup now), rich links, etc.

Made the full switch today 😜😁

...which is a prelude to ditching my #Bluesky account btw...
