my #selfhost is offline this morning. Driving me a little crazy but I’m think I’m close to getting it back up. I’m also looking at NAT-Loopback capable routers to replace my Telus/ISP router to fix this issue permanently. It's clear that some clients are just not appreciating the local DNS

@stalbaum Definitely, I often find myself scrolling and not knowing where it will end. I agree, Folding up posts longer than 256 words with an ellipses would work. I’d even favour this as a default setting, and users could undo it if they wish.

ICYMI, @stux did a post highlighting how Mastodon can be used as a private intranet just for you and your friends.

This is thanks to Mastodon's optional "limited federation mode" which uses allowlists instead of blocklists. This mode blocks all servers by default and only federates with servers you list. If your allowlist is blank, then it doesn't federate at all.

If you're interested in using this mode, there's more info at:

#Mastodon / #feditip: Please don't use URL shorteners, they don't help with saving on character count because web addresses are counted as 23 characters. Many users won't boost or click on shortened URLs because links whose destinations you can't check are considered security risks, and are hostile to screen readers. Transparent and informative URLs are right there in the address bar for your use, there's no need to go through an opaque and potentially insecure shortening service.

A question on word filtering ( #mastodon specifically, just in case the various software approach things differently):

If I filter a word, will that also filter matching hashtags? Or do you need to filter both?

is stupid. When I share a link, it doesn’t allow me to type or paste text. I have to come in to mastodon and edit my post. And why do we have post character limits? X you can pay to get rid of it and UpScrolled doesn’t have any. Why follow old twitter rules???!!!!

Some instances are allowing absurdly long character limits... Possibly unlimited. I'm not complaining, could mute or such. But maybe it is time for apps to fold up text longer than 256 words under an ellipsis? designers and leaders, thoughts?

#mastodon must have a central european organisation where individual serverowners can come together. Make a financial plan so the #eu can reserve money. Then the money can transported to individual serverowner to support local mastodon servers. Mayby even a central organisation can buy in serverspace together. Just my toughts.
