The #Fediverse and #Mastodon are nice and all...but in moments like this I miss the good cases in which twitter was a nice tool to connect with people you would otherwise never get to know in the space of two clicks..like a couple of years ago I could, one minute after finishing his last novel, tweet #JonathanCoe to tell him how much I liked it, and he replied a minute after that. Nothing like this in sight on Mastodon I'm afraid 😣 #books #reading

Got into it again this past weekend about whether quote-boosts, or quote-toots, or whatever you want to call them, will ruin Mastodon. Whether they will bring the toxicity of Twitter here.
I think one thing auguring better outcomes here is the fact that from the get-go (in fact, before they are even implemented to use), users may opt themselves (or specific toots) out of being subject to quotes.
Will this make a difference? I think it changes the incentive structure for bad behavior. And the incentives matter.
On my own posts and others I notice here, very often popular posts get a ratio of boosts:favorites of 1:2. It varies (and it's hard to see sometimes because faves don't always federate), but that seems a common approximation.
On Bluesky, my popular posts and others I see often have a repost:fave ratio closer to 1:10. Why? What's the difference?
We could say it's cultural—Bluesky users are more jealous, more clout-chasey. Maybe. But I would point out the incentives are different—faves on Mastodon are not as visible AND DO NOT INFLUENCE AN ALGORITHM. There is less function to a fave here, less of an effect, and therefore less reason to use it.
Our culture of boosting may be different, but so is the relative value and effect of a fave to a boost.
I think quote-posts will be like that, too. On Twitter, at least when I was there, there was no way to stop quotes, short of taking your account private. Here, a large number of people will opt themselves out by default, and many others will selectively do so on posts they feel are vulnerable. If abuse comes, many more users will do the same. The relative pool of targets will be much smaller, and can recede further in response to conditions.
I don't think the dogpiles and bad faith quoting will ever be as prevalent here as they were there, because the structure is different, and the incentive isn't there.

Peer to peer video calls (PeerJS) are now a thing on my chat app. You will be able to call anyone in the #fediverse with this, though you would need to initiate the call from my app for now.

Hopefully Codeberg is settled but...
I built a web browser, or, well, I modified a fork of Firefox.
Bridge: https://codeberg.org/rozodru/Bridge
A privacy focused, AI disabled, FEDIVERSE INTEGRATED, Browser with Vim navigation via Tridactyl, built in Bitwarden, and Ublock. Also has the RSS Feed detection from old versions of Firefox.
You can have your Mastodon Feed in the browser AND if you use Lemmy where ever you are on the internet the browser will detect if the current page/blog post/news article/whatever has an open discussion on whatever Lemmy instance you like (multiple even) and will provide you with a direct link to the discussion.
This is a very early alpha build but I feel it's finally in a spot now where people can try it out.
Currently only working on Linux.

I am working on editing @johannab 's FediCon 2025 talk right now.
Once it is edited, I will upload it to the FediCon PeerTube account:
