Content warning:Hypothetical on Fediverse security

I have been elected president of my could try, running as an anticapitalist populist and using non-corporate social media.

As a result I have brought many, many users and new instances to the fediverse. It is mainstream now, it has gone viral, if you will, and it has helped me go viral. But there is an issue.

My server is another country, and I realize that my security may in danger. My meager contributions, if any, to cover the server operations aren't enough to prevent major social media corporations from coming after my server to try to compromise it. It has created an unfair burden to the server operator.

Obviously, there is a point when I should have switched to my own server. Lift the burden, and control my own security. With millions of followers and followeds, it will not be hard for my server to become federated with many other servers. But when is/was that point? When I move to my own instance, are there still vulnerabilities on the other instance I was originally on?

Likewise, if I move to the fediverse with a huge following and abundant fame, should I just start with own instance? Can't move followers and followeds in that case, but there will be a network effect.

I think about this because I do miss being able to speak directly to power on the corporate social media site. Is this a real hindrance to having world leaders #OnHere?

Keeping the Open Social Web running wouldn’t be possible without the server admins who sacrifice their time, money, and self to this online community.

Coming from Big Tech, it's easy to take these things for granted; we're used to social media being for-profit.

Instead, here on the Fediverse, it's our job to say thank you. We're sure your admin would appreciate a coffee sized donation or a meaningful message of thanks.
